Newbie looking for advice: Should I bring cash, credit or both to Cambodia?

Post by arthur.gane »

I am looking at a few weeks holiday in Cambodia next year. I just want to ask, first up, should I bring cash or credit cards or a mixture of both.

Hi Arthur. ATMs are practically everywhere, so no issues getting cash out. Don't forget to tell your banks that you'll be traveling to Cambodia beforehand.

I'd personally bring enough USD to pay for your visa on arrival and a couple of days of travel, just in case you have any issues getting cash out for any reason. And ATMs here let you choose between USD or Khmer Riel.

Credit cards usually incur a fee for cash advances don't they (been years since I've had a CC)? Better off bringing a Debit Card, or travel card, for withdrawing cash from ATM's...Credit Card just for emergencies.

I've found Debit Card to be a much safer option then carrying large amounts of money I never have more then $200 on me at any given time in Cambodia.
Hope you enjoy your holiday,

If you do decide to use debit card withdrawals at ATMs to access the bulk of your money, do check your bank's fees associated with international withdrawals as I know some banks are charging ludicrous amounts for this service. Getting charged $20 every time you withdraw one or two hundred dollars...

Bring $300 in unmarked notes. The rest you can withdraw if you need to.

Top up cards like Revout allow you to withdraw 200 pounds or euros for free per month, then charge 2% after. Much cheaper than most uk banks.

Get a monzo or revolut card before you come.

But yes get a card and cash for your time here.

I'd personally bring more than one, both you can control with an app on your phone for transfers. (Just don't lose your phone eithe)

Worried about losing any of either?

MONEY BELTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

Someone has already mentioned bringing unmarked US$. But to expand on that a little:-

No torn notes (even small tears may render the note unwanted)
No really old notes.
No defacement on the notes.

Also, use the hotel safe. Carry with you an amount of cash you will need plus a little extra maybe. Stash the bulk of your cash in the safe with a debit or credit card. That way if you lose your wallet you are covered. Leave your passport in the safe too as you will only need it if you are in trouble with the law and in nearly 10 years here I have never been asked to show it on the street to anyone.
