Is anyone currently on the ground in Sihanoukville?

I heard recently that 10,000 Chinese have left the city never to return because China actually wants to force Cambodia to keep baning online casinos.

Does that mean it's easier to find decent priced accomidation in town?

I was trying really hard to decide between Siem Reap and Battambang, but it would definitely be nice to have access to a beach.

I don't really care about all the construction site garbage lying around. I'm just coming to live on savings and work in room almost all day, so I just need access to a food market and somewhere to run.

Any feedback?

Or it will just be one of those other towns and I'll use swimming pool at a hotel where you can buy lunch to use.

I suggest Phnom Penh or Kampot or Siemens Reap as good Alternatives.

Go and check it out how you feel about it first. Rents have come down. Not as low as they used to be but you shouldn't have trouble to find a room with AC if your budget can go as high as $200. I just saw room advertised at Otres beach for $200. Looked like it's old guesthouse. Bit more (+$400) and you should get proper studio apartment from one of the new condos too.

It's good the prices have come down. I suppose I will check out anywhere if I don't find anything.

I would prefer somewhere in between downtown and Golden Lion for about 250 + 50 for AC. Don't care if it's old and basic. Part of the adventure and don't need western quality.

Much prefer easy access to Sokha beach.

That area is all building site, including the one that collapsed.
Here's the river that empties onto Sokha beach, that is literally shit. That's the Sokha hotel on the left side of the photo Image

@OP Read this before you go swimming. Cambodian NGO Mother Nature has reported repeatedly that sewers and waste water from the new constructions continue to go directly into the sea in Sihanoukville. The competent authorities are still working on the problem.

I thought that was blocked?

The river at beach end was pretty much dry at least few weeks ago and no visible black water flow.

Compared to year ago it was totally visible that the black water from the river flowed to the sea. In the video the flow is actually pretty low...

They tested the E-coli count but the gauge exploded, the tester died of cholera and they had to close the lab for a year to decontaminate for the plague.
Some doctors came to give it the official OK (cos no negative results, or anything else, came outa the lab alive) but all their teeth fell out and they never got an erection agin, so they went away and never came back. Probably died,

Some people still go there tho'.

The flow is low. That's more a component of rain season ending much earlier than last year than anything else though. That river starts on Sihanoukville mountain, flows under ct mittapheap, ekareach, and finally ends at Sokha. There is still no treatment for this water before it hits the sea. I went a few weeks ago to the public area (furthest away from the outflow) and it still smells of black water.

Could be, though I didn't really smell anything (except normal stagnant water smell) while I was there (8 days) and it did rain pretty heavily on couple days.
Sihanoukville authorities close canal to transfer flow of polluted water

The first four water treatment plants, which have been open for testing since Monday and have been linked to one another, are located at Independence, Sokha, O’Sa’at and Ochheuteal beaches.
