If you renew your passport early, do you get an earlier expiry date?

My passport expires next year. I plan to renew it in Australia. New Australian passports are for 10 years.

Do they give you 10 years from the expiry date of the old passport, or 10 years from when you renew it?

That is, if you renew it early, will you get an earlier expiry date?

It’s 10 years from when you renew it. A passport issued December 2020 is valid until December 2030 regardless of previous passport validity.

Sad but true...
no extra pages...
But the free upgrade to 52 pgs instead of the standard 28 pgs is available upon request at renewal (checkmark the appropriate box on form DS-82). Only 110 USD 😎
