How easy to find cheap monthly studio in Siem Reap?

Hello,

Does anyone know how easy it is to find a basic Cambodian style studio room in Siem Reap. I just want somewhere cheap ($150-250) and not anywhere with all the bells and whistles.

I read Siem Reap has two sides, west of the river for tourists and east of the river for locals. Apparently you can find these types of rooms around Wat Bo road and that general area.

Thanks for the help...

Hi,
If your truly looking for a "local" Cambodian room they are readily available. Cross over the bridge and continue on Route 6 until you hit a large market on your right. Then just head off on any small road on your left hand side and there are plenty of rooms for rent that are basic and cheap.

But I would recommend you have a Khmer friend look at the room first and ask about rents/electricity and water.

Be aware we're talking very basic roof over your head with a fan. It will be sometimes noisy, HOT, and you may find yourself occasionally a target for "a small loan". Make sure you test out the toilet and shower. If it barely works move on.

Those rooms will be at the low end of your range (including utilities).

If you want to be in the Wat Bo area, I'm thinking you may have to look a bit harder/longer. I've watched that area continue to develop the past few years and have watched rents rise from about $200-$400 for small apartments to $300-$600 for small apartments. That doesn't mean you can't find something in that area - just that you'll have to look a bit harder.

The other area you might look at is along the bypass road where it splits off from route 6 coming into town. Take a drive along that road and you may find an area or two you like in terms of what is available and there will be lots of small rooms for rent - aiming at locals. Some are as cheap as $50-$75 a month (plus utilities).

You can definitely meet your goal. Spend a bit of time driving around Siem Reap to understand the lay of the land - and how far out of town/shopping you feel comfortable with. If you have a Khmer friend to do the initial asking you'll end up paying a bit less.

Good luck.
