What's happening with the Cambodiana Hotel

Post by Doc67 » Wed Jun 12, 2019 8:08 am

I go there several days a week to use the gym and the pool and am concerned about a rumour I heard that it was going to be flattened in 4 months. I am due to renew my 6 month membership in 2 months so don't want to get caught out!

Someone else told me was being just being refurbished. I asked someone else who told me that plans have been approved for two 50 storey buildings but the technical difficulties building such a structure so close to the river would probably be too challenging for this area.

Does anyone know what is going on?

Well Doc they said last year it would be but sounded like another fanciful bombastic idea and nothing since. It is owned by the Royal Group who have had a few issues of late, although maybe selling the ANZ Royal freed up some cash

I take some solace from the size of the proposed project. The technical challenges of a 133 story building would be enormous, two at 60 storeys would still probably be too much. Plus, of course, the economic viability of the project, although you can't rule out a vanity project mindset.

Hopefully it will quietly get shelved for a while longer when the final technical and economic feasibility studies hit their desks...

I don't think Royal Group sold their share of the bank, so it is now a JTrust/Royal Group venture instead - ANZ are the ones that wanted out of the region entirely.

It's certainly overdue a refurb, not heard anything about demolition.

Scaffolding and netting have gone on the front in the last few days, and various rooms facing Sisowath have been refurbed in the last few months. Looks more like a paint job and some freshening up than a demolition.

The brand new Emion hotel opposite probably squeezing their business with nicer, cheaper rooms.

Edit. I'm referring to the Himawari above, not the Cambodiana.

I've known people claiming they were working on the refurbishing / demolition / selling of Cambodiana since at least 10 years, and nothing ever happened so far. Maybe the same rumour circulating around?

One of our Khmer members, Samouth, reported on his brief employment there.

Sounded like absolute slavery.

The Cambodiana has been my parents hotel of choice when coming for their yearly visits to the Kingdom for the past 10 years.

Over the last 2 years I've noticed a marked decline in service, quality and general upkeep. Even on the 5th floor which are supposed to be the poshest quarters.

It's gotten to the point that I am almost embarrassed to have them stay there again. For what they charge for the 5th floor rooms, the current state of play is unacceptable.

I think this year I'll be steering them somewhere else.

Samouth worked at Raffles.

One can build a building of any height anywhere provided the foundations are correctly designed and built. I know someone who put in piles in Takamau on the river bank and about 20 metres down hit rock and burnt vegetation. Was it a primeval forest that once existed on that watercourse?
