Old hand but not in Cambodia. Best area to live there?

Post by Johnsell50 »

Hi All,
I am new to the forum. I have lived in Philippines 2 1/2 year and Thai for 3 1/2 years but had to come back to USA to help my brother. I love Asia but Thailand is getting tough on VISA and I'd like to learn more about Cambodia. I like country life but also many city things so My preference would be country close to city and I would like somewhere with ex-pats around. Any suggestions welcome. And yes, I am over retirement age with a pension.
Thanks,
John

Hi John, and welcome to CEO.

I've made the decision for you. Will move to Kampot. You will love it. You will thank me.

After a few months you will curse me, realizing that maybe Kampot isn't for you after all and then you will move to Phnom Penh. You like to drink, right?

Old hand ... I am over retirement age with a pension.
I always assumed "old hand" meant 'syphilitic late-middle-aged degenerate who thinks pawing lots of hookers qualifies as cultural expertise", but I see now it simply means "geriatric".

I prefer to get away from Phnom Penh, and tourist areas in general.

I suggest, start by visiting a number of different places and then decide.

Phnom Penh is probably your best bet. If you have 30k sat around then a Thai retirement visa is no problem. If you're old and skint then maybe Vietnam is your better bet.

Hi All,
Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I do like to drink, and maybe I will try Kampot for a little but first, Phnom Penh probably. Then I can travel around from there and see what the rest of the country is like. "Old Hand" is not a bad thing, it just means experienced. I have yet to try syphilis, and hookers leave a lot to be desired. Why pay for something you can get for "Free" ? And yes, I know, nothing is ever free, but with the free ones you have a lot less chance of bringing home something that will rot away your pride and joy. Do people like to play cards in Cambodia? In Thailand it is against the law. I like playing cards too, especially bridge and poker, but only online poker. As far as Vietnam, the only thing I left there were friends. I won't be going back.

A lot of people in Cambodia play poker. Most if it is in casinos. I think it is illegal outside casinos.

The expats run a game in Kampot. Try Kampot notice board on Facebook.

It doesn't mean that either. Dictionary definition of old hand:
noun
a person with a lot of experience in something.
"the examiner is an old hand at the game"
synonyms: expert, past master, virtuoso, master, wizard, genius, artist, adept, professional, doyen, veteran, maestro, connoisseur, authority, grandmaster, master hand, skilled person.
