There's a rat in mi kitchen....

Anyone have any interesting yet effective ways of getting rid of a rat?
Poison means a smelly, decomposing carcass.
Sticky paper traps leave you with a pesky, live rodent to deal with.
A cat is out of the question and I simply don't have time to sit and wait with a decent air rifle.

Traps like these are widely available in or around most Khmer markets for about $5. Like the sticky paper thing you are left with a live rodent, but it isn't covered in glue or anything so you can just release it somewhere away from your house while a bunch of Khmers look at you like you're a weirdo.

Sad truth is a cat is best. Maybe you can loan a beast for a day. Feed her well and her scent will scare away that rat. After that invite the cat over at regular intervals for high tea. The rat has left traces and other will follow those. So some regular cat visitations seem advisable. Thanks to my cat I was living in the one house in the neighborhood without a rodent problem. Extremely useful animals.

hardcore steel rat traps are available at the Khmer Market...
I see very little reason to be keeping them alive and releasing them on some neighbor.
not good if you have kids or pets....
very effective...
with all the rain, the rodents and snakes are having to move to higher ground.
whatever you do...better be proactive....
good hunting

You don't have to release them. With that type of trap you can just dunk it in a bucket and they soon drown.

Then you can throw them into the middle of the nearest road so they get squashed up by tires and totally disappear. 8-)

Or put the trap and rodent on the balcony in the full sun. They don't like that.

Agreed. What's the point of letting the poor bastards rot? Worried about Username Taken here; it usually starts with ripping off fly wings, using a magnifying glass to grill ants, explode frogs by inserting firecrackers and leads to dungeons and mass graves at the back of the house......

After you've caught the rat then you need to find where it's getting in and block up the hole.
