Protocols on walking your dog in the 'burbs

Trigger warning - in this post I speak unkindly of certain Khmer individuals. You've been warned, I don't care if you're triggered.

We live in the slightly poorer area of Boeung Tompun, and walk our little dog on a leash several times a day.

Our street has about a dozen free-range dogs attached to various families. The dogs roam the streets, fight occasionally, howl at the ice-cream seller and one of the snail sellers, and crap, eat and sleep where they like. Not one of the dogs would know a leash if you showed one to it (or drew a picture with crayons).

One guy keeps several large dogs that he lets out to savage any other dogs they can catch, daily, but now that I and the team carry a metal rod for defence he calls them back if he sees us. Big man, quite a hero.

A particular aunty (because "bitch" is not nice) has opened a 'shop' down the dark end of the street that seems to be failing spectacularly, and across the road from her is a row of vacant blocks. This stretch is where our dog likes to take a deuce, although he has to inspect all other options before going back to his usual.

I'm not sure that if in her stupidity the aunty has associated our dog crapping across the street from her with her aforementioned spectacularly failing enterprise, but she's taken to scolding our (young-adult female) team members if the dog craps in her vicinity. Being typical Khmer girls they dish it straight back, but the skirmish is growing into something larger and I've promised to go down and have words.

Disclosure - I'm known in the street as being prepared to have words in an outside voice as I blasted crap out of the guy who's big savage dogs got a hold of our dog, some time back.

A Khmer mate suggests a chat with the sangkat if this old bitch, err, auntie, doesn't back off.

Any (helpful, constructive) thoughts or comments?

No, I'm not going to pick up after the dog when he normally craps on or very near other people's household garbage that they've thrown onto an empty verge.

Beef balls and brake fluid.

And for the dog, a pat.

TBH (admittedly not knowing the specifics of your area) i wouldn’t be particularly chuffed if a neighbour walked his dog 100 yards away from his house so it can crap in front of mine.
She probably chucks a stone at the strays who hunch their back in front of her house, but doesn’t really have that option with your domesticated leash led beast.

Maybe try to see it from her perspective.

You're assuming I don't see it from her perspective, but that's a fair call. Having the nearest five neighbour's dogs crap in our gateway gives me a perspective on that, but I don't feel the need to bully their children about it.

The dog has a couple of preferred patches along the uninhabited stretch and only occasionally drops within view of her place, but it seems to be a growing issue for her. Her bullying of my team is becoming a growing issue for me.

The kicker is that her own dog, unleashed and roaming the street, craps fairly evenly up and down the street including in front of her place.

FTFY

Uhhh...I doubt SC will do that. Just a suspicion.

Sorry Stroppy, but even though we have the same problems with canine aggression, we live rurally where rabies is a valid concern(no vets). I carry a bamboo rod and find it effective. Since we are on about a hectare of land our two dogs defecate on our property. However when we moto to the fields through a small village our dogs get pack attacked while their owners quietly look on. But my bamboo rod found a new target and a new but complacent enemy. At least the little kids aren't afraid of me. Let the dogs and their owners growl, I don't eat shit.

It's a hard line to find at times. The need to carry a rod to protect the dog makes it difficult to build relationships with the rest of the neighbours.

The wat dog's, here in OSoam, run a pack. They were quite brutal with my young bloke and it was 5 or more, mature dog's , on one 6-12 month old puppy. The big old boss dog was the provocateur fo sho.
As my boy got a little bigger, boss dog wanted to kill him more.
One day, it happened close enough to me I grabbed a meter of 12mm threaded rod and proceeded to smack said dog, in the forehead, several times, as it slowly came to the realisation; it couldn't win.
Fucker's still on charge of the wat dogs...But he don't come roun here no mo!

No I didn’t assume that at all. I was just trying to introduce a view you might not have considered.
Maybe she thinks her dog shares the crap through the neighbourhood and yours concentrated on one areas unfairly ;-)

That's exactly what we're using as a deterrent, seems to work well. It amazes me how much the owners of aggressive dogs stand back and watch their dogs savage other dogs, but the second you show you'll defend your dog, they're hustling theirs back indoors. There's some serious psychological damage in this country, "fo sho".
