I can not imagine Cambodia being any worse that Tijuana or Mumbai

Ask us anything. Cambodia Expats Online has a huge community of long-term expats that can answer any question you may have about life in Cambodia. Have some questions you want to ask before you move to Cambodia? Ask them here. Our community can also answer any questions you have about how to find a job or what kind of work is available for expats in Cambodia, whether you're looking for info about Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, or anywhere else in the Kingdom. You're also welcome to ask about visa and work permit questions as well, as the immigration rules change often, especially since COVID-19. Don't be shy, ask CEO's community anything!

I can not imagine Cambodia being any worse that Tijuana or Mumbai

Let's say I have a Khmer wife and $2000 a month to retire on, from what I've seen on this board you can't help but get jacked no matter where you live. As a traveled man I find hard to believe. I've spent time in TJ, Moscow, the slums of Paris, Kingstown, etc.. and they can be pretty heavy places, but I know enough to stay out of trouble. Most of the stories you're posting are from Phnom Penh and involve drug addicts, tourists, drunken tourist morons and the like. And yet there you still are, in paradise.......

Most people who move to Cambodia find they have to make certain compromises to enjoy a cheaper or simpler life in the country. At times the annoyances and inconveniences that have to be endured tests one's sanity and can often make an individual question whether they've made the right decision. Gossiping about, bringing attention to, or highlighting other's addictions, poor choices, desperation, misfortune or bad luck, reinforces to the individual that their own choices or life in Cambodia may not be that bad after all.To put it more succinctly - it makes us feel better about our own shitty lives.

Just to ad, I don't think I've ever heard of Cambodia referred to as "paradise".

Perhaps those outside the most populated capital area don't live to tell the tale :assasin:

Kung-fu, did you take a bitter pill today?

Not sure expats in Cambodia have such shitty lives....rather, maybe they have too much time on their hands...

I think OP was metaphorically speaking re "paradise" ...for many that live here and have the choice to leave or go back to their home countries, they are still here..presumably, for their own bit of "paradise". For me, PP has a lot going for it...the cheaper costs, eating out/not having to cook, not having to clean, a nice, cute GF and not boring compared to a sterile home country. Each to their own tho..

And btw Cambodia is not a city.
As for the OP's title, no, IMO Cambodia is probably not any worse than a lot of other places. For me, it is a lot better. Probably safer than most of the US, Europe, Australia too - except for the driving. Depends what you get up to of course, but you can find trouble in any country if you don't take care.

Nobody wants to read about how someone got a cake for their birthday or felt quite happy as they ambled along the quays.
