Supermarket vs the market

So I come from England where if you want to eat cheap the supermarket is the place to go. It will beat any local market hands down for virtually any product whereas here the supermarkets seem to be the most expensive places to shop. I've been here over a year now and I buy everything from my local market as it's far cheaper.

I can buy things here from local shops like beer, soap detergent, shampoo etc all cheaper then the supermarkets. Are the supermarkets here only interested in selling to the rich? Surely they have the buying power to be cheaper then the little guy?

You've answered your own question. The only things I buy at the supermarket are things I can't get at the markets. Anyway it's good that the supermarkets aren't forcing all the little guys out of business. I prefer this model.

re u sure? I'd think they would buy bulk from their own suppliers...

Many items here in Thailand are cheaper in the supermarkets than the local markets.
Place like Tesco, Big C can sometimes be 15-20% cheaper..
and if u buy at Super cheap up to 25% less
