Hi, im from the UK and will be moving to Cambodia next year, what license do you need to legally drive a motorbike greater than 150cc in Cambodia?

125cc and below do not require a licence.

A Cambodian A2 licence is required for bikes above 125cc.

Thanks! Is a UK driving license enough to apply for the a2 or do you need a UK bike license to obtain the a2?

Your homecountry licence must cover riding a motorbike and this is then incuded in a Cambodian 1 year licence.

Get an International Licence before coming to Cambodia and that will cover you for your first year.

Getting a 1 year Cambodian Licence is quite a task now due to the paperwork ( eg. first time application must include residence certificate not just rental agreement).
A licence can only be obtained in Phnom Penh.

If your paper work is 100% in order put aside 2-4 hours at the office about 45 minutes from Riverside. If you dont have correct photocopies and at least 3-4 passport photos you are not going to get your licence. No corruption at this office so dont think a few dollars will sort it.

Take your glasses if you need as medical test. Office gets up and running around 9am and quite a line of people waiting by then.

I've never seen a definitive answer, but afaik the IDP is useless here, despite Cambodia being a signatory to the convention.

There's a helper out there at the license office that can help you navigate the process, for a fee.

The lady at the third window at the licence office will take cash if your documents are not in order. However, it's a far better idea to get you documents in order, everything is tightening up and not crossing your t's and dotting your i's will see you open to fines in the future.

International licence is not valid in Cambodia.

Why get a Cambodian driving licence?

Let’s get the obvious one out of the way. By law, you are obliged to have a Cambodian licence if you are driving any type of motorised vehicle, except motorcycles under 125cc. Also if you want insurance you’ll need a Cambo licence, even for a moto under 125cc - not that anyone bothers.

Why bother having a license? just apply to the rules, indicators, lights on/off, helmet (!), trying to stay on the right side of the road! i've been stopped on average 3 times a year, they usually ask for 20$, but i apologize, offering them a cigg, and tell them friendly that a 20 is a bit OTT, so i suggest 2 or 3$, and off i go!

Police accepted my International Licence so grey area l guess. The other issue is travel insurance may not cover you in an accident if you dont have a valid licence for the country.

Yes. But not only that. Some travel and/or accident insurance policies specifically exclude coverage in motorcycle accidents, or may cover only 50% of costs.
