Not an official holiday but as many Khmer are ethnic Chinese, and others become Chinese for the day, it can feel that way.

^ this
This is the holiday were it used to be dangerous not to be drunk on the road since everyone else was. Probably still the case to some extent.

20 out of the normal 57,students in my sister-in-law's grade 3 class showed up today. Half of the faculty didn't. I remember when I taught at ACE only my students of Chinese origin would attend during Chinese New Year.

There are schools open today? Optimistic. Both the Khmer and English schools here in SHV for my kids are shut until this is over.

"Optimistic". Perhaps and as Hanno pointed out, "no surprise.". Nonetheless it is not a state holiday and if teachers were paid a decent salary and penalized for being absent this wouldn't happen. Now that's idealistic.
