Dak Nong ensures adequate power supply for Cambodia’s Mondulkiri

Dak Nong (VNA) – The power company of the Central Highland province of Dak Nong has splashed out tens of billions of VND on upgrading its electrical systems to ensure there is a sufficient power supply for Cambodia’s Mondulkiri province.

The Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) has worked to keep the lights on in the Cambodian locality for the past nine years, seeing the expansion of the power grid in Mondulkiri as an important mission, contributing to promoting friendship between Vietnam and Cambodia.

In the initial stage, the 250km transmission line, which was put into operation in 2012, ran through Bu Prang border gate in Quang Truc commune, Tuy Duc district, Dak Nong province. However, the line was shortened after the province invested more than 60 billion VND (2.58 million USD) to upgrade the power grid.

As the electricity demand in Mondulkiri has been on the rise, nearly 21 billion VND (904,000 USD) was spent to improve the cross-border transmission line in 2018.

Last year, Dak Nong province provided Mondulkiri province with nearly 6 million kWh in commercial electricity, and earned 13 billion VND (559,000 USD) from power supply for the Cambodian locality, 10 times higher than the amount recorded in 2012. –VNA

As well as the electricity supply from Vietnam, more electricity imports will come from Laos to supply Cambodia's north-east provinces this year. This is despite the newly constructed Lower Sesan 2 hydro-electric dam which is now operational in Stung Treng province.

Energy deal inked with Laos
Cambodia will increase energy imports from neighbouring Laos following the signing of a deal between the countries on Wednesday.

The energy deal was signed in Vientiane during the visit of a Cambodian delegation that included Prime Minister HE.

Provinces near the border with Laos – including Preah Vihear, Stung Treng, Ratanakkiri and Kratie – will be supplied electricity produced in Laos, according to the agreement.

In the press conference that followed the signing ceremony, no details were revealed regarding the amount of energy that will be exchanged.
