Sihanoukville, Cambodia News: Furi Real Estate, a Cambodian company, has announced the beginning of the construction of the Furi Times Square shopping mall, to be built over a hectare (or two and a half acres) of land in the Mittapheap area of Sihanoukville.

Chin Chanlen, the director of Furi Times Square, has posed the first symbolic stone of the structure, declaring that the growing numbers of tourists visiting Sihanoukville mean that there is no time to waste, and Sihanoukville's first real shopping mall is expected to be completed by the end of 2019 at an investment cost of US$10M. It is designed to be environmentally friendly and will be aimed at Chinese customers.

Sihanoukville’s first mall holds grand opening
A grand ceremony was held on Monday to mark the formal opening of FURI Times Square, the first mall in Sihanoukville.

Kuoch Chamroeun, governor of Sihanoukville province, led a group of local and international dignitaries who graced the occasion.

The opening marks the climax for a monumental project that is set to become a part of Sihanoukville’s transformation into a major cosmopolitan destination.

Sihanoukville, which hosts the Kingdom’s sole deepwater seaport and its largest special economic zone, is among the fastest growing areas of Cambodia. Its beaches have also made Sihanoukville one of the top tourist destinations in the Kingdom.

“FURI Corporation is proud to be part of the evolution of Sihanoukville and shaping the cityscape with one of the first high-end shopping malls and entertainment complexes on the Kingdom’s coast,” Donald Lee, public relations officer at FURI Corporation, said.

FURI Times Square is a joint project of FURI Corporation and investors from Macau and Hong Kong. The project cost is pegged at $10 million.

Construction of the project started in September last year. Design of the mall is courtesy of ONG & ONG design group, one of the top three architecture firms in Singapore

Mr Lee also pointed out that FURI Times Square will also be the first luxury shopping and entertainment experience in Sihanoukville that will serve as an important community center for locals, tourists and expats.

The four-storey mixed-use space, according to him, has up to 13,000 square metres of leasing space and will be home to one of the first movie theaters in the city as well as a skybar.
