PHNOM PENH — Cambodia will ask Japan to invest $800 million (612.70 million pounds) in a skytrain system for the capital Phnom Penh, Prime Minister HE said on Monday during a visit to Tokyo.

Inadequate infrastructure, particularly in rural areas, has partly deterred investors in Cambodia, one of the world's poorest countries.
HE said on Facebook the skytrain would link the capital to its international airport.

Trade between Cambodia and Japan in 2016 was $1.3 billion, according to HE.
Although China dominates the investment landscape in Cambodia, Japan is an important player and is the third-largest investor in Cambodia.

Not much economic benefit there. A cost benefit analysis would not add up. If only Cambodia begged for money for schools, universities, hospitals and agriculture.

It has and does. It took billions of dollars to get where we are today. More 100,000 dollar cars than you can shake a stick at.
What happened to China funding it?

But it works ?

PHNOM PENH - Japan has agreed to conduct a feasibility study on a project for a light railway connection between Phnom Penh International Airport and the city centre, with a view to easing traffic congestion and improving services for foreign tourists, the Cambodian government said on Wednesday.

The Cambodian Foreign Ministry, in a statement, said Prime Minister HE discussed the project during his meeting with Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe on Monday in Tokyo.

HE said last week that the skytrain project would cost about US$800 million.
