Exporting more rubber, but at a loss, is it viable ?

Rubber Exports Keep Rising

Rubber exports have continued to rise in the first nine months of the year, despite the fall and current stagnation of prices as global demand continues to stall, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF).

Data released this week by MAFF show that exports until September were 82,825 tons, up almost 11 percent from the same period last year. MAFF’s data also shows that the number of hectares under cultivation has also continued to rise.

An official at the Association for Rubber Development in Cambodia, who declined to give his name, told Khmer Times that this increase in exports was not surprising, but the low prices continue to worry the industry.
“It is not a big deal because the increase in exports results from the increase in plantation area from which we can collect the latex. For the rubber industry we always keep exporting even though the price declines as to we need to get money for our operations, even if we are currently selling at a loss.”...

Article from the PPP on Cambodia's rubber industry at a time when global prices are down:

Waiting to tap rubber’s rebound
Fri, 28 October 2016
Kali Kotoski and Cheng Sokhorng

The large-scale rubber plantations that arrived in force in Cambodia a decade ago as global rubber prices moved to historic peaks are facing sober prospects as trees they planted before the commodity’s prices headed south begin to reach maturity.

While international rubber prices have been slowly rising on a slight pick-up in demand from China, the world’s top consumer, a plantation owner said yesterday that the current $1,450 per tonne is not enough for large-scale producers to recoup their massive capital investment. He said that until rubber passes the $2,000 per tonne mark, it did not make economic sense to begin large-scale production...

Is rubber bouncing back ? Cambodian exports are up, production is increasing, and global prices are rising...

Recently, rubber prices on the global commodities market have been expected to rise to $2,500 per ton due to the improved state of the world economy and efforts by four major rubber producing countries – Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia – to cut back supply.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture’s figures as of September this year, Cambodia exported 82,825 tons of rubber – up almost 11 percent compared with the same period last year.
The ministry’s figures also show that the number of rubber plantations continues to rise – mostly in the northeast provinces of Mondulkiri and Rattanakiri.
According to the ministry, total rubber plantation areas reached 402,310 hectares in September, far ahead of the government’s target of 400,000 hectares by 2020.

Despite volatile prices, rubber exports rise by 37 percent
- Shipments of Cambodian rubber abroad increased by nearly 36 percent in 2017, amounting to 190,000 tonnes, according to a senior official at the general directorate of rubber.

Pol Sopha, the director-general of the general directorate of rubber at the Ministry of Agriculture, told Khmer Times that in 2017 Cambodia exported 50,000 more tonnes of rubber than in the year before.

“The amount of rubber exports continue to increase every year, with our biggest markets being Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and China,” he said, noting also that land used for rubber plantations is also on the rise, with 7,000 hectares across the country dedicated to the commodity.

Mr Sopha said rubber has been facing very unstable prices in the international market. In the last months of 2016, a tonne was selling for $1,700, but from January to March of 2017 it was being traded at $2,200. In December 2017, the price went down to $1,600...

The tendency of Exports Up, Prices Down continues to hamper the Cambodian rubber market.

Rubber exports grow slightly as prices fall
26 Apr 2018
Exports of rubber rose moderately during the first three months of the year, as the market for the commodity continues to be hampered by unstable prices.

During the first quarter of 2018, rubber exports grew by just 880 tonnes, reaching a total of 25,416 tonnes. During that same period, the price of the commodity decreased.

“Due to the current situation, the price of rubber in the international market is not stable, and farmers and rubber producers are taking a hit,” said Pol Sopha, director-general of the general directorate of rubber.

Lim Heng, vice-president of An Mady Group, expressed similar concerns.

“With the cost of production being very high in Cambodia, a low price is bad news for farmers and producers, who won’t be able to make a profit,” he said.
