Chinese girly bar on street 136

Walked down street 136 last night on the way to riverside and Paddy Rice. Never made it to either, unfortunately. Around Ostro and the row of girl bars, spied a girly bar with signage completely in Chinese. Not a word of English or Khmer. Smack right in the middle of the girly bars.

Belt and Road has arrived at the heart of the expat land.

Felt kinda sad that the most visible sign of expat influence is changing.

It was a legal requirement to have Khmer on sinage, wasn't it? Has that changed?

That's true and the most recent proclamation is that the Khmer language must have top billing with any other languages to be placed below it.

Having just Chinese on the signage smacks of "Chinese patrons Only". Either a deliberate move by the owner(s) or a dumb one. Possibly both?

It's been the case for as long as I can remember that the Khmer script has to be on top and be noticeably bigger than the lower foreign text. There are plenty of exceptions, Brown Coffee, Burger King etc. I believe these companies have to pay a large "signage tax".

Ok, I guess the Jan. 2018 article I read was more specifically for construction project sites.
The Khmer text on the signage must appear above any translation into foreign languages, and must be at least twice the size of the translated text.

It had to happen eventually.. Seeing a lot more colonial masters in the hostess bars now. In time it may turn out like Angeles City and the koreans..

If you are referring to the bar on the left hand side as you head towards the river, thats Tiger bar. Got new signage a long time ago. It's in english with small Chinese script beneath. Hardly a 'Chinese only' bar. Why do folks put 'pen to paper' so to speak and create posts without any form of thought?
