Khmer Rally Race Through Protected Forests Organized by Environment Ministry

Race through sanctuaries to boost conservation

The Environment Ministry will today host a Khmer Rally Race through protected areas in three provinces to raise awareness for the protection of forests and natural resources.

Ministry spokesman Neth Pheaktra said at a press conference yesterday that the ministry cooperated with the Cambodia Motor Sports Federation to organise the race, which begins today and runs until Sunday.

The race, comprised of nine cars and 16 motorbikes being driven by racers from Cambodia, New Zealand, Wales, Scotland, Thailand and Australia, will stretch across Kampong Speu, Kampot and Preah Sihanouk provinces.

“The race will cross wildlife sanctuaries in those three provinces,” Mr Pheaktra said, noting that the sanctuaries include Phnom Oral Wildlife Sanctuary, Kirirom National Park, Preah Monivong Bokor National Park and Phnom Kravanh National Park.

Mr Pheaktra said the race will showcase the beauty of the sanctuaries in a bid to ensure they are protected in the future.

Phnom Penh: A rally event, entitled “Together for the Protection and Conservation of Natural Resources in Cambodia” is taking place in the south west of the country this weekend. Race teams have completed the first leg on Friday and continued with the second event on Saturday .

On the first day, all of the race teams departed from Phnom Penh towards the race destination in Kampong Speu, driving 137 km through the Phnom Oral Wildlife Sanctuary and Kirirom National Park. The lucky drivers saw some beautiful landscaped fields and vast tracts of sugarcane.

In the first leg of the competition, first place went to Cambodia’s David Roper from Scotland, while Cambodians Sek Chan Dara and Lon Sophia and Thai Song Yos came in second and third.

The second day of racing has taken place today in the provinces of Sihanoukville and Kampot on a 58km road running through coconut plantations crossing the Cardamom Mountains.

Khmer Rally Raid 2019, an adventure on four-wheelers to promote the Kingdom’s environmental and natural resource preservation, officially began this morning under the presidency of H.E. Neth Pheaktra, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Environment.

Themed “Together to Preserve the Environment and Natural Resources”, the rally covers a distance of more than 600 kilometres passing three provinces – Kampong Thom, Preah Vihear, and Siem Reap.

The rally from May 17 to 20 will attract captured images of the richness of Cambodia’s beautiful natural sceneries inspiring love and contribution to the conservation of the resources among the public, according to the Ministry of Environment.

Seventy-two (72) riders of 45 cars and motorcycles from different countries, including Cambodia, Thailand, Autralia, New Zealand, Wales, Scotland, France and the Netherlands, join the Khmer Rally Raid 2019 organised by Ministry of Environment and Cambodian Motorsport Federation in association with TOTAL Cambodia – a gas and oil company.

Khmer Rally Raid concludes
The fourth Khmer Rally Raid 2019, an adventure on four-wheels to promote the Kingdom’s environmental and natural resource preservation, wrapped up in Siem Reap yesterday with organisers hailing another successful edition of the annual race fixture.

Themed “Together to Preserve the Environment and Natural Resources”, the rally covered a distance of more than 600 kilometres passing three provinces – Kampong Thom, Preah Vihear, and Siem Reap.

According to the Ministry of Environment led by Neth Pheaktra, Secretary of State at the Ministry, the event intended to attract images of the richness of Cambodia’s beautiful natural sceneries inspiring love and contribution to the conservation of the resources among the public.

The Khmer Rally Raid 2019 was organised by the Ministry of Environment and the Cambodian Motor sport Federation in association with TOTAL Cambodia – a gas and oil company.
