Downfall of Japanese woman TV star
Yes, it's to do with sex. Apparently Japanese women in the limelight are supposed to be "spotless" ? Elsewhere this would "sell".
Interesting article on the impossible conditions imposed on the girl/women stars of the Japanese entertainment industry.

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/f ... try-sexismFrom nightly appearances on TV to persona non grata of Japanese show business in a matter of weeks, the drama of Rebecca Eri Ray Vaughan’s fall from grace was matched only by how much it revealed about Japan’s harsh treatment of its female entertainers...
Within weeks of a magazine breaking news of her alleged affair with Enon Kawatani, a 27-year-old singer in the band Gesu no Kiwani Otome, her employers ripped up contracts, reportedly at the behest of her own management agency, Sun Music.
By last week, she had disappeared from TV screens, and lost commercial contracts and her own radio show...

Poor thing, I really liked "Bekki". Listened to a lot of her talk shows and watched TV appearances. Honestly though, it's really the fault of the Japanese viewers. A vast majority are extremely conservative and sexist, and it's (in my opinion) only natural for the TV executives and media to do what they do. If they don't, they'd completely lose "face" in the eyes of their viewers if they didn't act accordingly, so it's really survival for them.
Somewhat similar thing happened with popular voice actress Aya Hirano. Fans went apeshit when they found out her "scandal", burning her CDs, DVDs, magazines etc, so it's difficult to blame everything on the media execs. Just opinion.

Re: Downfall of Japanese woman TV star
Lots and lots of "ha-fu" (half people) in the media these day, and since they look different from the majority they tend to get more of spotlight. That's just my opinion, but in terms of the look on TV the vast majority of Japanese do NOT look the celebrities, much in the same way that celebrities don't resemble the masses in other countries.
The "half" proportion of population is disproportionate to the average Japanese.
As for operations, it's very common in Korean, a lot less so in Japan although it's not unheard of.
Other "Ha-Fu" examples for misc:
Shirota Yuu (Spanish)
Eiji Wentz (German)
Mokomichi Hayami (Filipino)
Kaneshiro Takeshi
Rosa Kato (Italian)
Erika Sawajiri (French)
Meisa Kuroki (South American)
Crystal Kay (African American)
