Yulin dog festival this weekend - thousands to the slaughter

Dog and cat meat traders at Yulin festival in China have said that business is booming, despite calls for it to close amid animal cruelty accusations.

It is expected that thousands of cats and dogs will be slaughtered this weekend to mark the summer solstice on Sunday in Yulin, washed down with lycee wine.

Government officials have ostensibly “banned” the controversial annual Yulin Dog Meat Festival after it attracted protesters and criticism from around the world.
However, the slaughter of cats and dogs for meat is not outlawed in China, and the local government in Yulin says it cannot stop legitimate businesses preparing meat in the run-up to this year’s solstice on 21 June.

Indeed, it has been reported that business is only getting better for the dog and cat meat traders as the controversy continues.

As the annual festival gets underway again this year, Chinese media are accusing westerners and opponents of the festival of "cultural extremism".

Yulin dog meat festival draws crowds despite controversy

BEIJING - Crowds flocked to China's most notorious dog meat festival to buy butchered canines as it opened Tuesday, activists on the scene said, as the annual slaughter proceeded despite international outrage.

More than 10,000 dogs are killed at the event in conditions activists describe as brutal, with dogs beaten and boiled alive in the belief that the more terrified they are, the tastier the meat.

"It’s very crowded in the Dongkou dog meat market," Peter Li, China specialist for the Humane Society International (HSI) told AFP.

The local government has dispatched extra plainclothes police to monitor outside groups and prevent scuffles between butchers and animal lovers, Li said, adding that a dog meat trader brandished a knife at journalists on the eve of the festival.

“There are plainclothes police everywhere," he said. "They watch outsiders, from outside the city and the country."

The summer solstice event proceeded despite a 11 million signature petition sent by HSI to President Xi Jinping demanding an end to the festival and video appeals from celebrities such as Matt Damon and Rooney Mara.

State-run Chinese media have defended the festival, with an editorial in the Global Times newspaper criticising foreign activism as a kind of “cultural extremism”.

“Now Westerners are demanding non-Westerners change their eating habits, because they think their cultures and feelings deserve more respect than others,” it said last week.

“Some Western media and animal rights protection groups have hyped up the festival to be a blot on China's national image. This is no more than a kind of cultural extremism.”..

Yulin festival: Doubts over 'dog meat ban'
18 May 2017
According to US campaigners, the Yulin dog-eating festival in China, notorious for its animal cruelty, will this year be banned from selling dog meat.
Yet doubts remain over what has been said, and some vendors told the BBC they had heard nothing about a ban.

Eating dogs is not illegal in China but the annual festival in Guangxi draws widespread domestic and international opposition each June.

The dogs, often stolen pets or working dogs, are brutally killed, critics say.
It is estimated that in Yulin's heyday a few years back, some 10,000 dogs and cats were killed and eaten during the 10-day Lychee and Dog Meat Festival - some still with their pet collars on.

Several animal rights activist groups are saying that vendors and restaurants have been told no dog meat will be allowed to be sold during this year's festival nor in the days running up to it.
Peter Li, China policy specialist at HSI, told the BBC the authorities had already tried to discourage the practice, but that this year, they would be fining those found violating the ban.

But reports of a ban seem to have come as a surprise to people in Yulin.
"Banning the sales of dog meat? I've not heard of it," the owner of a popular dog meat restaurant in the city told the BBC.

BBC staff in Beijing say the latest reports have not appeared in Chinese media - even though it would be very good international PR for the city - and point out that the dog festival is a huge revenue-earner for Yulin, so banning it entirely would be devastating for the economy.

‘Dog Jelly’ Horrifies Netizens, But Vendor Says Sales Swift
May 17, 2017
BANGKOK — A Thai sweets vendor’s creativity left the social media appalled when she shared her latest creation online Tuesday.

Photos of coconut milk jelly, or woon, in the shape of a dog sold by Wilaiwan Thai Sweets went viral yesterday, drawing overwhelming expressions of disgust from netizens who complained they looked a little too close to humans’ best friends – though the shop owner said business has never been better.

the annual media frenzy starts soon with "journalists" "exposing" cruelty (cue picture of girl crying next to "her" cooked puppy) to animals with "international" (media) and "domestic" (western ngos) calling for it to be banned.

Yulin Dog Meat Festival 2020
While some locals claim it's part of their culture, millions protest against the cruel festival worldwide and some people even adopt rescued dogs
Last updated: May 31, 2020

Yulin Dog Meat Festival (or Lychee and Dog Meat Eating Festival) is a controversial festival held in Yulin, Guangxi during the summer solstice in June. It is estimated that since 2009, almost 15,000 dogs were consumed during "festivities."
Image Even though the festival started in 2009, eating dog meat is believed to be an ancient Chinese tradition. Chinese practitioners of folk medicine thought that dog meat is the best solution against summer heat, although there is no physiological or medical evidence to support it.
During the 10-day festival, dogs (and also cats) are exhibited in metal cages and wooden crate before they are skinned, cooked, and eaten by visitors of the event. Not a big surprise why animal rights supporters fight against such a celebration.

Campaigners and activists of animal rights state that animals are treated abominably. Millions worlwide are joining the campaign to apply political pressure and end the festival. The Humane Society International collected 11 million signatures on a petition calling for China authorities to ban the event. A Chinese group called Beijing Mothers Against Animal Cruelty presented that petition to Yulin officials.
