It is good to recognise his death, but we seem to have forgotten Betty White, whom died about a week ago aged 99. She was a true icon, acting up to her last days. And acting in a modern sense, not like an elderly person (she would often use fuck and other curse words). She was real. She will be missed.

It was actually another actor that died last year, Cicely Tyson, that opened the doors for Blacks. Sydney Poitier received his Oscar right after her work became recognised with a Presidential Medal of Freedom, for her work for Black people. Sydney, while deserved, was in the right place at the right time, and was one of the most predicted winners ever, due to the timing.

The Oscars has continued in this vein. Heath Ledger and Peter Finch were possibly deserved too, but, again, there were no bets available, for the post-humous awards.

But Betty White is, er, white?
There’s bucket loads of white icons who were acting around the time of Poitier. The difference with him was he was A list and black. White was just a two bit actress who happened to be old and still around.

I was referring to the fact she was still contributing, and I went into the coloured thing, after that, which you have conveniently deleted. Not your best work.

Not really the point of Hanno’s post though, is it, which you seem to have missed.

Everyone is aware of old actors still contributing but Poitier was a groundbreaker and a brilliant actor, unlike many of his contemporaries like White and that other black actor I’ve never heard of. No one has “forgotten” about them. Speak for yourself.

You’re pointing out the bleeding obvious and distracting from the flavour of the OP.
Enough already.

And lets not forget Richard Roundtree "the first black action hero" in his portrayal of private detective John Shaft in the 1971 film Shaft, who was able to debunk the stereotype! :dm:
Nice work Mr Poitier :hattip:

And still the best Shaft film as far as I am concerned. The story was a little weak but Roundtree was born for that role. Cool music too.

Oh yes. Shaft. Good actor.

Also. Not forgetting Kirk Lazarus a modern day black actor setting new boundaries.

And not forgetting Sidney Poitier.

"How do you thank someone who has taken you from crayons to perfume?"

Great movie.
