Here is my contribution to ANZAC Day,,,,, a poem I wrote many years ago,. Hope you enjoy and it means something to you.
Lone Soldier.
I once counted my friends on the battlefield,
And that was a long time ago.
Then I counted my friends on the Parade Ground.
But that was all just for show.
Then I counted my friends on the bar stools.
As they fell off one at a time.
And I saw them off to the Pearly White gate,
On last count there were more than nine.
Today I count my friends on one hand.
I look around to see where they may be.
They're gone,
...............I'm alone.
...........................There's no-one.
Just my shadow,
...................My memories,
....................................And me.
Lone Soldier.
I once counted my friends on the battlefield,
And that was a long time ago.
Then I counted my friends on the Parade Ground.
But that was all just for show.
Then I counted my friends on the bar stools.
As they fell off one at a time.
And I saw them off to the Pearly White gate,
On last count there were more than nine.
Today I count my friends on one hand.
I look around to see where they may be.
They're gone,
...............I'm alone.
...........................There's no-one.
Just my shadow,
...................My memories,
....................................And me.
