Christchurch Shooting Updates: 40 Are Dead After 2 Mosques Are Hit
• Officials said that four people were in custody, and that a number of explosive devices were found attached to vehicles that they had stopped.

• A Muslim leader in New Zealand said the attack was especially shocking as it took place during midday Friday prayers. The police called on mosques nationally to “shut their doors” and urged people to stay away from the mosques until further notice.

• A video and manifesto that appeared to be by a gunman involved in the shooting were posted online on the day of the attack.

....and another 48 people were being treated for gunshot wounds at Christchurch Hospital, and that others with gunshot wounds were being treated at other health care facilities in the city.
Seems they have plenty of guns, just not as many crazies as America ( it seems)
Murders are rare in New Zealand, and gun homicides even rarer. There were 35 murders countrywide in 2017. And since 2007, gun homicides have been in the single digits each year except 2009, when there were 11.

But there are plenty of guns.

There were 1.2 million registered firearms in the country of 4.6 million people in 2017, according to the Small Arms Survey, a Swiss nonprofit.

Witnesses describe Christchurch attack: 'I saw people drop dead'
Fri 15 Mar 2019 07.28 GMT
Before the shooting starting, the Al Noor mosque in the New Zealand city of Christchurch was “peaceful, calm and quiet”.

“As it is when the sermon starts, you could hear a pin drop,” a man identified as Ramzan told reporters on Friday.

Then about 1.40pm during afternoon prayers, gunfire broke out.

“It started in the main room ... I was in the side room, so I didn’t see who was shooting but I saw that some people were running out to my room where I was in, I saw some people had blood on their body and some people were limping,” Ramzan told reporters.

Forty people have been confirmed dead after shootings at two mosques Christchurch on Friday. Three suspects – including at least one Australian – are in custody and multiple explosive devices have been found attached to cars in the city.

At least one of the shootings appears to be have been streamed live on Facebook, and a video purporting to show the shooting began circulating on social media immediately after the attack. It shows what appears to be the shooter driving towards the mosque before beginning his rampage.

The 16-minute video shows the man driving towards the mosque with several high-powered rifles scrawled with messages beside him on the passenger seat of his silver Subaru.

“Remember lads, subscribe to Pewdiepie,” he can be heard saying, a reference to the Swedish YouTube celebrity and video gamer.

As he approaches the entrance of the mosque, he indiscriminately begins firing on people inside. After several minutes, he leaves, randomly shooting at people on the street through the windscreen of his car.

Police have urged people not to share the “distressing” footage, but witness accounts from the attack paint a chilling picture of events inside the packed mosque.

Farid Ahmed described hiding underneath a bench inside to escape from the shooter as he made his way through the building.

“People started rushing out, running out [and] the guy turned on them and started shooting them … so, I knew I had no chance,” he said.

“There was a bench, I just lie down [with] half my body under the bench and my legs out. Pretending to stop my breath. He changed magazines seven times. Bang, bang, bang, then when the bullets stop he [would] change the magazine again.

“The mosque is in a few compartments, he went to all different compartments and he shoot everyone.”

Ramzan, who is in a wheelchair, said the shooting went “for six minutes or more”.

“I could hear screaming and crying, I saw some people drop dead, some people were running away, I was in a wheelchair, so I couldn’t get anywhere,” he said.

I do not see any real remedy to these events. There will always be crazies in society. And gun control is not really the answer, because it is crims who use guns, and if the good people of the world were properly armed, that could be a good and proper deterrent.

Perhaps we are going to have to head to churches, mosques, and schools that all have armed guards. Pathetic. Sad. Unnecessary tragedy.

I'm sorry, I do not even understand your Q, but I am speaking in general terms, and have not really caught up on all of the deets on this one properly yet. Please do not take my comments as in any way uncaring or meaning any disrespect. I am thinking of the big picture globally as these events happen everywhere and I think we can never end them. Some will try, but they will do so but severely restricting our liberty and freedom, which cannot be allowed to happen either.

Shocking. Doesn't NZ often come out near the top in worlds safest countries lists? Of all the countries for this to happen, I'm surprised it was NZ.

Does this mean Muslims will now view all westerners as potential terrorists, in the same way, because of a few Islamic extremists, we view all Muslims as potential terrorists? Or is it only us whites who get to choose who the potential terrorists are?

So an Aussie guy goes to NZ with the express intent of committing this crime. Where and how does he get his munitions? How does he escape suspicion and fly under the radar? You would think any radicalized kind of person might have been flagged already?

Horrific. I am also astounded he is still alive. I doubt even he expected that. Any source yet to read his manifesto?
