Karla Peralta is surrounded by food. As a line cook in Facebook’s cafeteria, she spends her days preparing free meals for the tech firm’s staff. She’s worked in kitchens for most of her 30 years in the US, building a life in Silicon Valley as a single mother raising two daughters.
But at home, food is a different story. The region’s soaring rents and high cost-of-living means that even with a full-time job, putting food on the table hasn’t been simple. Over the years she has struggled to afford groceries – at one point feeding her family of three with food stamps that amounted to $75 a week, about half what the government describes as a “thrifty” food budget. “I was thinking, when am I going to get through this?” she said.
In a region famed for its foodie culture, where the well-heeled can dine on gold-flecked steaks, $500 tasting menus and $29 loaves of bread, hunger is alarmingly widespread, according to a new study shared exclusively with the Guardian.

pretty shocking and dissonant in a country with such low unemployment
cleaners in this area on 50K a year used to sleep on the city buses as they could not afford rent.

That' why Americans are moving to Cambodia where they can afford a good lifestyle with no food shortage!

I am a believer. Regular people can work anywhere and enjoy the country's lifestyle. After expenses there isn't shit left over. I think the way to go for me is live in Cambodia November - June and then go work in the U.S. July-October. Can do shit work in Cambodia for the 8 months if need be, and shit work in the U.S. for 4 months. In the end I basically only really need to work 4 months out of the year. Don't get to enjoy a full U.S. lifestyle but that's just fine with me. I prefer Cambodia. Minimum wage here is 11.00 per hour and you can work anywhere. I have the option to live rent free when I get here (U.S.) and use public transportation. I also have free food-stamps at 196 per month living here if I cry poverty (a truthful cry). 11$ per hour @ 40 hours x 28 weeks = 12,320 before taxes. After taxes.. keep in mind this is my only income for the year and it is min wage so they are low... take home at least 9200. Air fare is 1000 round trip and I have to send home 300 per month to Cambodia. Which costs me 2200. This gives me 7 grand to live on for 8 months in Cambodia. On paper looks like it will work. What I can't do in the U.S. is spend money. Subsidize with shit Cambo job for beer money (i.e. tend bar) and I'll call it a life. Good news is I can still collect social security when the time comes even if I live in Cambodia. Sucks to be poor.
