Those Hong Kong landlords really know how to divide a place up. Anyone know of anything similar in size in other places?

Lol. I was hoping the guy in the last pic had an iPhone 7s, but it's only a Huawei when you zoom in. They all look at bit like Russian Market to me.
I wonder what the rates of depression are in these places? Sell your soul for a can of beans?

I used to live in a place not much bigger than that. Spent most of my time outside at parks, on the road or at internet cafes for the aircon/avoiding rain if I had the money. I only went home to sleep, change clothes and check the postbox.

I don't know, I didn't mind actually. Never felt cramped or unhappy about it.

That's interesting. Was that in Japan?
I suppose if you've just left home and are glad of some personal space it wouldn't be bad - for a little while.
The captions say that there are over 100,000 living like that in Hong Kong.

Is japan as bad in some places? I would find it hard to beleive.

Cambodian workers often live in a similar area per person when sharing 4 to a small room. But no privacy.

Most places however (at least 99%+) are not nearly that small. There's a lot of countryside open real estate in Japan despite common western belief, so there's no real need to have something that small, but there are a small group of people like me who really don't care about living space. I just liked that place because rent was so cheap (18000 yen/month, about $140 USD at the time plus free parking) and I was never home in the first place, so it was a perfect money saving tool for me.

There are some places in Japan that are dorm style for factory workers (mainly foreigners), but in general the housing situation isn't bad at all, at least by my standards. I'm Asian though, and I don't mind small places. Most of my British and Aussie roommates complained about the size of our apartments though, so I don't know...goes by tastes I guess.
