Cambodia is the least expensive country to purchase real estate as a foreigner in Asia. It costs just under US$1000 per square meter to buy prime residential property in the nation’s capital of Phnom Penh.

Mind you, we aren’t talking about new high-rise condominiums in Phnom Penh. Expat-targeted info about real estate in Cambodia focuses on such condos. But they’re often expensive, suffer from high vacancy rates, aren’t popular among locals, and have little resale value.

Older shop-house apartments built during Cambodia’s colonial era are some of the best deals in the region though. Their quality can range from fit-it-ups, to 5-star standards and luxurious fittings.

From what i see prices in Kampot, you could buy in Phuket, (and not something that was just a rice field)

He's been peddling that article for ages. He looks about 12 years old. They were trying to get people to invest in their (entirely unregulated) property fund. Easy to get it - just try to get out of it. Sounded like a racket to me.

If only you could find a spouse with dual Cambodian-Thai citizenship, you could find all kinds of ways to enjoy tropical property, but it does all seem rather scammy.
Like in Burma or Angola, where they ask for rents that are so far removed from average cost of living, and they want a year up front. It seems way too anxiety-inducing. I'd rather have a local (i.e.: a spouse) as a proxy to sort such things out via. Isn't Malaysia the only country in SEAsia where foreigners can actually own property?

I don't even want to reveal the secret. But the place starts with the letter B.
