Both sides of my family have continuously captained the the life boats from the west coast of Scotland, my grandfather received an award from the queen for doing so, couldn't swim apparently though it wouldn't matter in those waters. I've been in a gale force 5 on a 60m trawler & that was exciting enough for me. Brave men & women who risk their lives for others!

I love watching those videos but the idea of being on a ship in those conditions horrifies me! The worst I've experienced were some choppy bits on ferries across the Irish Sea or from Rosslare to Cherbourg.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

As a kid, going back and forth by ferry was great fun. We had some wild crossings across the Irish Sea. Full on gale force, ship shuddering away. But my best recollection was storm force 10 increasing, in the med in the early 80s. I’ve always been in awe at the power of nature. Watching storms up close. Once in a while, maybe getting a little too close. Back then, I was indestructible. The consequences never really entered my mind. But when I went to college, and we started looking at this from a technical viewpoint, and thinking of ships lost and why, it was another matter.John Bingham wrote: ↑Sun Apr 04, 2021 9:38 pm I love watching those videos but the idea of being on a ship in those conditions horrifies me! Dover/Calais on the Hovercraft when it was borderline safe to cross in whatever gale force it was back then - that was a journey. #rollercoaster Sadly like Concorde, no longer a trip you can take
My dad worked at Townsend Thoresen at the time of the Zeebrugge disaster (office job), but had a close friend who was one of those maritime search & rescue guys who worked on the Herald of Free Enterprise recovery. Pretty harrowing stories & the most unassuming guy you'd think would want to be in that situation.

I was on that a few times, it was insanely noisy and really bumpy, really fast though compared to the Channel Ferries at the time.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

That's really neat, I feel like a lot of the innovation of the decades were lost after the soviet era and an end to the competition between the blocs.John Bingham wrote: ↑Tue Apr 06, 2021 12:37 amI was on that a few times, it was insanely noisy and really bumpy, really fast though compared to the Channel Ferries at the time.
