Hawkins was born and grew up in Belfast. She enjoyed singing at church, and was influenced by her grandmother singing at home.....

Michael Kiwanuka - Cold Little Heart (Live Session Video)

Did you ever want it?
Did you want bad?
Oh, my, it tears me apart
Did you ever fight it?
All of the pain, so much power running through my veins.
Bleeding, I'm bleeding!
My cold little heart...
Oh I... I can't stand myself.
And I know in my heart, in this cold heart
I can live or I can die, I believe if I just try...
You believe in you and I... In you and I...
In you and I... In you and I...
Did you ever notice I've been ashamed?
All my life I've been playing games
We can try and hide it, it's all the same.
I've been losing you one day at a time.
Bleeding, I'm bleeding!
My cold little heart...
Oh I... I can't stand myself.
And I know in my heart, in this cold heart
I can live or I can die, I believe if I just try...
You believe in you and I...
And I know in my heart, in this cold heart
I can live or I can die, I believe if I just try...
You believe in you and I... In you and I...
In you and I... In you and I...
In you and I... In you and I...
In you and I... In you and I...
Maybe this time I can be strong...
But since I know who I am
I'm probably wrong.
Maybe this time I can go far... But thinking about where I've been
ain't helping me start.
Always "hope" but never "expect".

Just looking at the last couple of videos got me digging out some old Renee Geyer CDs
I'm standing up, so I must be straight.

I am listening to Mango Groove - a South African band from the 80s - 90-s - they have an amazing sound, especially if you like a good brass section.

It’s a really great Afropop fusion between western and African Kwela music.

They were around during Apartheid and were certainly a very loud anti-apartheid voice, led by a white woman, Claire Johnston.

One of the songs, Hellfire, is about a mixed-race relationship during the time it was illegal. It’s subtle though. I remember being at a dance with a hall full of AWB (Afrikaans conservatives) with everyone hopping to Hellfire. They had no idea what they were dancing to. It was one of those moments when I realised I was not the same as other people.

Three bands changed my thinking about apartheid in the 80’s- Johnny Clegg (Jaluka and Savuka), Hotline (also led by a white woman - PJ Powers), and Mango Groove.

I have not listened to them for years but decided during this time at home I’d reconnect with some “old” music.
Once you've read the dictionary, every other book is just a remix.

If you enjoy noise pollution and obnoxious driving practices, Phnom Penh is the place for you!
