Dunno about over looked..but yeah, that was a classic too. Same Platoon imo.

Yep, they say Poe was the inspiration for the Kurtz but it wasn't true, (he deny's it) . He set himself up and trained the Hmong hill tribes ( with cia backing) in the southwest of laos in the early '60 to fight the Pathet Laos and Vietnamese. Used to pay for ears and heads of the Pathet laos, He was stationed at Long tieng before that.

I just finished ,"A Great Place to Have a War: America in Laos and the Birth of a Military CIA"

Interesting read ; https://cslegion.com/vietnam/tony-poes- ... a-in-laod/

Without googling I am assuming “The Thin Red Line” is an account of the Crimean war battle... the one famous for the charge of the light brigade? The charge, btw, which would have been successful had the heavy brigade assisted.

nope;
Adaptation of James Jones' autobiographical 1962 novel, focusing on the conflict at Guadalcanal during the second World War.

BUT:
The film's title comes from the novel, which alludes to a line from Rudyard Kipling's poem "Tommy", from Barrack-Room Ballads, in which he calls foot soldiers "the thin red line of heroes",[3] referring to the stand of the 93rd Regiment in the Battle of Balaclava of the Crimean War.

You haven’t been to Long Tien Richard, I believe one can go there now. When a couple of journos finally stumbled on it the CIA thought maybe they should kill them. But they realised the cat was out if the bag already.
I had a Thanksgiving dinner in Udorn in the early 90s at the house of a former Raven. I didn’t know what a Raven was then.
My favourite war movie is Cross of Iron but I do like the old ones. Guns of Navarone and Bridge Over The River Kwai are still watchable. Das Boot would have to be up there too.

I'll second that.

One of my favorite moments in cinema is the entire mission briefing scene with the CIA operative......cinematicly gripping.

....
in fact there's a short documentary on just this scene:

^^I'd say the same about the opening sequence with "The End" playing.
The movie "Hearts of darkness: A filmmakers apocalypse " is worth watching. Its here, says I can't watch it because I'm not in Australia, but maybe with one of those new-fangled VPN things?
