Post by phuketrichard »

One hell of a list of some great music of the 60's

In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

I'm not too sure about the list, for example "Foggy Dew" Sinéad O'Connor is a song written during WWI and "Love Train" by the O'Jays doesn't mention Vietnam. Are they just general anti-war songs?

Many are just about war in general or revived from previous eras.

The first protests against U.S. involvement in Vietnam were in 1945, when United States Merchant Marine sailors condemned the U.S. government for the use of U.S. merchant ships to transport European troops to "subjugate the native population" of Vietnam

OK i admit it. I am an old fart who actually lived during the hight of the Vietnam War and listened to the American AFN Radio station every day for it's great music and of course the Morning 'Chicken Man" This , too was Music in my ears. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chickenman_(radio_series)

Robin William's :Good Morning Vietnam contains several Hits of the Time and is one of his greatest works ever.

These are probably the two most iconic Australian songs directly relating to Vietnam.
Both written not long after the war. Both the stories of vets, Diggers, who went there and fought - and about how it affected their lives

Strangely (??) they both also became anthems for the majority of our generation who had long been against the war.
I think probably because they spoke about some of the terrible human costs.
But most crucially, they provided a really valuable insight into our vet's own personal experiences - one that enabled us (most of us, i think) to finally make peace with the vets of that war which we had hated so much.

These songs provided a really valuable bridge between both sides of that terrible conflict within our own generation.
For myself anyway. I have always regarded the Diggers with great compassion and huge admiration ever since first hearing their stories thru this music.
(and believe me, that was a big hump to get over)

"I was only 19" - Redgum 1983

"Khe Sahn" - Jimmy Barnes/Cold Chisel 1978 (still an alltime Aussie rock icon)
