"Yaba" in Thailand - crimes, consequences, rethinking punishment.

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

"Yaba" in Thailand - crimes, consequences, rethinking punishment.

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

No denying there's a big drug problem with yaba/yama/meth in SEA. Violent crimes are committed daily by people off their heads on yama or crystal meth.
Jealous son arrested for shotgun murder of his father

CHAI NAT - A 27-year-old man has been arrested for shooting dead his father in a jealous fit because he thought he was having a sexual affair with his teenage wife.

Subin Pansuang was caught on the Chai Nat-Takhli Road in Takhli district of neighbouring Nakhon Sawan province by a team of police and soldiers while riding a motorcycle on Wednesday evening, Thai media reported on Thursday.

The suspect was wanted for killing his father Thongbai at their house in tambon Huay Krot Pattana in Sankhaburi district of Chai Nat on Tuesday evening following a heated quarrel. He suspected his father was having sexual relations with his 18-year-old wife Suthiporn Seeda.

Thonbai, 53, was resting in a hammock at his house when his son allegedly walked up and shot him in the chest at close range with a shotgun. Mr Subin then allegedly aimed the gun at his wife, but she ran off to seek help from neighbours. He then fled.

The suspect said he bought the shotgun and four cartridges for 3,000 baht from a friend. He took amphetamine and drank beer before quarrelling with his father.

The Thai authorities have always supported the "tough on drugs" stance, but last month Justice Minister Paiboon Koomchaya admitted that they are losing the war on drugs and suggested there may be other ways of dealing with the problem. A month ago it was reported that Thai authorities were considering the idea of taking "yaba" or "meth" off the illicit dangerous drugs list:
Regime favours ending war on methamphetamine

The bill would allow the courts of justice to determine whether a drug offender deserves punishments such as a jail term or a fine that is less severe than the minimum penalties stipulated by law. He said the status of methamphetamines or ya ba should be changed from a severe to a normal drug. Citing medical studies, Gen Paiboon said methamphetamines's effects on health are less harmful than those of alcohol and cigarettes.

The Justice Ministry will hold discussions with the Public Health Ministry, the courts of justice and prosecutors, and other agencies to amend the law and find ways to take methamphetamines off the narcotics list.

Mr Veerapol told the meeting that Thailand has failed in its bid to use harsh legal measures against drug abuse and drug trafficking. Despite the harsh measures, the drug problem has continued unabated. More than half of about 270,000 legal cases pending in court are drugs-related, Mr Veerapol said. The Supreme Court president also admitted that several agencies, including the courts of justice, have still failed to work together to address the drug problem.

Meth is better for you health wise than alcohol or cigarettes?

That's my weekend planned. I'm going to be healthy for once.

Total legalisation of cannabis would be a good first step.
