Judging from the Cambodian unity I witnessed during the funeral procession it looks like the Khmer have found the heretofore missing pair. It is too overwhelming to be missed in any province.
I don't see either side backing down. Well, the ball is in the government's court and it may be unplayable. Could be interesting as the saying goes.

i have heard more locals attribute the murder to the opposition than the government

I certainly don't know. But I doubt if many of the observers and participants in the cortège believe that. Hence, true or not it's a moot point. Or else you're hanging with the wrong crowd.
