Those mega-container-ships carry stacks of containers but these are not fastened together; if a big wave smacks amidships, the containers are slammed into the sea.*

If the containers WERE fastened together, the whole ship, and its crew and cargo, would turn turtle.

* It may, or may not, happen that a container breaks open which is how this series of events came to pass:

France is a republic, it's Royal Gendarmerie here. The French helped set up the Royal Gendarmerie in the 90s.

I don't think that is true. I saw a documentary on mega container ships [ may have been history channel ] and they not only lock down the containers diagonally but each container is put in a certain location , allocated by computer , to distribute the weight on the ship evenly.

Duncan is probably in error; this can be checked by digging through the files of 'Popular Mechanics" - my only remembered source was a
man met in a bar who had worked on container ships for years.

by the same token you could say the same about trucks carrying containers,if they roll it will tip the truck over so why secure them!

Mammothboy2 is probably in error. ,,,, My source of info is also the Cambodian Daily and a girl called Srey Mom that I met at Walkabout. She had big containers .

Containers are locked to ship you only have to go dockside to see this.
