I dont think that the police were escorting, they were just there by coincidence.

For Table42 :
Tried to make some sense of this report and what it all means, but didn't find much either.
Looks like the cruise ship company is US, but the cruise boat "Dawn Princess" is "geared for Australians", whatever that means.
As for the police escort, who knows ? All I could find was some photos with bla-bla text (like that cited by CEONews) , so hard to say.
Could be the Sihanoukville police on parade for the cameras, could be the reports about crime in SV have got the company paying protection, could be due to the general feeling of insecurity for westerners traveling to exotic destinations at the moment ?
You'll have to make up your own version of events I think.
But AFAIR, the last unhappy ending for a cruise ship passenger in SV was an accident, where a woman fell off the ramp while boarding the ship more than a year ago: https://cambodiaexpatsonline.com/post121 ... le#p121197

I hope it also stopped somewhere else. I would hate to travel 13 days only to end up there.Anchor Moy wrote: 26 Night Cruise To Sihanoukville

Escorting? Most likely extorting.

I'm not sure what Federal Police are. These are Gendarmerie Royal - an army branch with wider jurisdiction than National Police and powers to arrest both citizens and Army/ Police. They are under the control of the Ministry of Defence, while the National Police are under the Ministry of Interior.frank lee bent wrote:GR is like federal police right?

The Dawn Princess is owned/operated by Princess Cruise Lines of Valencia, California. The headquarters may be in the US, but the ship is flagged in Bermuda so it doesn't have to meet US Coast Guard safety rules, doesn't have to pay the US IRS and US labor laws (like paying a good wage.)(flags of convenience countries) It was built in 1997. The crews are from all over the third world and only the officers are really trained well. This time of year is not really the season to cruise here as it can get very stormy and rough. (Its cruise ship time in Alaska.)
These cruise ships are very top heavy and the crews a lot of times are not properly trained. Just last month one of them took out a dock in Ketchikan, Alaska causing millions of dollars in damage.
Google search the "Sinking of the Prinsendam, fire." (off Alaska)
"Many of the crew, predominantly Indonesians, were the first to scramble to the lifeboats."
Popular Mechanics April 1981.
The only reason there wasn't mass deaths is because of US Merchant sailors on a big tanker near by and the US Coast Guard, US Airforce, and state of Alaska are set up for disasters like this. (The water is damn cold!)
BTW/ The Costa Concordia disaster, the Captain was just about the first person off the ship.
Over 40 years off and on of "going to sea" and I wouldn't get on one of those top heavy pieces of junk if you paid me. They are accidents looking for a place to happen.
