Two Vietnamese Fishermen Shot by Cambodian Soldiers.

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Two Vietnamese fishermen were shot and killed by Cambodian soldiers who came across a group of illegal fishermen in Takeo last Thursday. According to the soldiers, they fired to protect themselves when they were surrounded and attacked. It is not stated if these killings will be treated as murder or legitimate self-defense.
“The Vietnamese were fishing illegally inside Cambodia,” Mr. Phin said. “They were savage because they attacked our authorities with paddles to try to seize their guns. That’s why [the soldiers] opened fire, to try to disperse them.”

He said the fishermen also were armed with swords, spears and electric rods.

“[The soldiers] fired an AK-47 because they tried to kill our authorities, because they knew the authorities would arrest them and put them in prison,” he said. “If we hadn’t opened fire on those Vietnamese people, our authorities would have been killed.”

Vietnamese officials have refused to repatriate a Cambodian police officer who allegedly shot and killed one Vietnamese national and injured a second on Saturday after crossing the border to visit his “second wife”.

Lay Bunthy, deputy police chief at the Phnom Den International Checkpoint, could face a life sentence in Vietnam, said Yuk Sarat, Takeo’s Kiri Vong district police chief.

Bunthy is suspected of using a K-59 pistol to kill Le Van Duoc and injure Phan Van Quang in revenge after being beaten by Van Duoc three months ago, Sarat said.

Meanwhile, the Vietnamese Embassy in Phnom Penh yesterday said the Cambodian government would be asked to investigate the fatal shooting of two Vietnamese fishermen by Cambodian officers over the weekend...

Boat border crossing closed after fatal clash
Wed, 20 July 2016

An unofficial waterway crossing between Cambodia and Vietnam in Takeo province has been temporarily closed after a violent clash between Vietnamese fishermen and Cambodian Fishery Administration officials last Friday left two Vietnamese dead and a Cambodian injured.

The clash erupted after Cambodian authorities discovered fishermen from Vietnam using illegal electric-shock fishing devices.

“The temporary shutdown is to improve the security, order and regulation in the area,” said Yorng Thoeun, chief of staff of Borei Cholsar district, referring to the Chey Chork River, which serves as a border crossing for agricultural and other goods.
