Ex-Bodyguard’s Alibi for Murder: Playing Cards
by Ben Sokhean | August 16, 2016

Meas Sambath, a former bodyguard for disgraced military general Thong Sarath, took the stand on Monday in the ongoing trial over the 2014 murder of tycoon Ung Meng Chue, testifying that he was playing cards all day on the day of the hit and did not leave his boss’s office complex.

Mr. Sambath and four fellow guards were charged with carrying out an assassination on the orders of Mr. Sarath, whose family also has vast business holdings including construction firm Borey 999. The general was charged with instigating the killing and arrested last year after a monthslong manhunt.
Meanwhile...
Mr. Sarath was again absent from the trial on Monday due to ongoing health problems. Ngy Meng, director of the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital, confirmed that Mr. Sarath had been in and out of the hospital, but said he did not know what he was suffering from.

In a separate but related case, the previous conviction for weapon possession has been upheld by the supreme court against the tycoon and his parents.
Tycoon’s Weapons Conviction Upheld
The Supreme Court yesterday handed down a verdict in the case of former Major General Thong Sarath and his parents over allegations they illegally used and kept weapons and ammunition inside their homes in Phnom Penh in 2014.

The Supreme Court upheld the lower courts’ judgments as effective and sentenced them from two years to two years and six months each in prison.

Mr. Sarath, the owner of Meanchey International Investment Company and Borey 999 apartments, and five of his bodyguards are also on trial for the shooting of magnate Ung Meng Chue in November 2014.

Very strange ad for the group's Borey 999 apartments.

The murder trial of wealthy tycoon, General Thong Sarath, which began in July 2016, is drawing to a close and the verdict is expected next month.

Long-running Tycoon Murder Trial Comes to a Close
April 7, 2017
Lawyers made their final arguments for acquittal on Friday for a former military general and his bodyguards accused in the brazen 2014 slaying of a wealthy businessman outside a Phnom Penh fruit stand.

The long-running trial featured confessions, recanted testimony, tearful alibis and video surveillance footage of the gunshots that killed Ung Meng Chue as he exited his Lexus SUV on November 22, 2014.

General Thong Sarath, a real estate tycoon accused of ordering the hit, never appeared at the trial, citing ill health. His bodyguards pleaded not guilty on Friday and reiterated their claims that despite their earlier confessions, they had not participated in the murder.

Sy Sathya, a lawyer representing the four bodyguards, pleaded with the court to drop the charges against his clients as they were innocent.

Police who investigated the murder concluded that one of Mr. Sarath’s bodyguards–Sieng Veasna–drove to the fruit store with an accomplice and shot Ung Meng Chue. Video footage of the killing was swiftly uploaded to social media. Mr. Veasna, who was charged with premeditated murder, has maintained his innocence...

A blog post on the crime from Dec 2014:
A crime in front to a security camera, an odd press conference and a hidden tycoon seem good elements for a detective movie. But it happens really in Cambodia and it is a good example of how things go along in the country with our “high-class.”

Many shared the video of how a man kills prominent business person Ung Meng Cheu, the chairman of Shimmex when he descended alone from his car in front to a fruits’ shop in Phnom Penh central’s Sihanouk’s Boulevard on November 30 at about 7:30 PM...

Four questioned over tycoon’s murder

Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday resumed the trial of tycoon Thong Sarath and his bodyguards over the murder of Ung Meng Chue in 2014 by questioning one suspect, three witnesses and showing CCTV footage of the murder.

On November 22, 2014, Mr Meng Chue was shot dead in front of a fruit shop in Chamkar Mon district.

Mr Sarath and his bodyguards Seang Veasna, Ly Sao, Meas Sambath, Kouy Chanthol, and Chhun Pheaktra are accused of being involved in the murder.

Mr Sarath was charged with initiating premeditated murder, while Mr Veasna and Mr Sao, who died of AIDS in 2016, were charged with premeditated murder.

Mr Chanthol, Mr Sambath and Mr Pheaktra were charged with being an accomplice to premeditated murder. All face a life sentence if convicted.

Mr Sarath did not attend the hearing yesterday due to health issues.

Catch up time for those who were not here in 2014, (and those who were here, but weren't following), this Okhna murder trial has been going on some time, fed by side stories with the main suspect running away to Vietnam, then being arrested and extradited, his parents being convicted of hiding weapons etc. The accused does not generally attend the court sessions because he is feeling poorly.

The main story is this: One powerful man is accused of ordering his bodyguards to shoot another powerful man, and Cambodian justice is working on the resolution of the problem. And these are the days of our lives...

This 18 page thread on the topic was started by LTO in November 2014: general-chatter/okhna-assassination-phn ... g%20Sarath

Looking at the original surveillance video Oenh Cheu defends himself but his pistol appears to jam.
Warning. Video contains violence and may be disturbing to some.
