Who is the other woman in the " hairdresser sex affair" ?

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Interesting study by Cambodia Daily journalists of the other female protagonist in the on-going so-called Kem Sokha "sex affair". Thy Sovantha was once a star of CNRP media, but she was expelled from the party and after the story of the "affair" broke, she turned on Kem Sokha, accusing him of sex-trafficking and demanding $1m for defamation.

The Rise and Revolt of ‘Rescue Girl’ Thy Sovantha
By Alex Willemyns and Kuch Naren

Once a rising star whose videos attracted young voters to the opposition party, Thy Sovantha’s popularity has tanked among her former fans since attacking deputy opposition leader Kem Sokha for an alleged affair.

Images and videos of the photogenic 18-year-old high-school student had been posted by the opposition party to the social networking website throughout the election campaign with less-than-subtle suggestions about the benefits of joining the CNRP’s campaign.

“It is known that the young National Rescue girls are beautiful and gentle when you meet them,” said one post in June 2013 from the CNRP’s Phnom Penh campaign manager Ly Sovichea, next to images of Ms. Sovantha assembling small CNRP flags.

In the months of demonstrations after the disputed election, Ms. Sovantha helped to lead—from atop her Lexus SUV—the opposition party’s chants of “HE, step down,” while using her smartphone to film news segments for the popular “I Love Cambodia Hot News II” Facebook page.

The clips helped to break the CPP’s stranglehold on the media and boost the CNRP to a near election victory, and her popularity and aggression were rewarded with positions alongside opposition leaders Sam Rainsy and Kem Sokha at protests that followed.

“HE is weaker than a woman; he dares not to challenge for re-election,” Ms. Sovantha shouted to protesters in December 2013. “He appears on TV and asks ‘What did I do wrong?’ Uncles, aunties, let me frankly ask: Who has made you suffer so much?”

“HE!” the crowd replied, as Ms. Sovantha filmed herself beaming for another clip.

Then suddenly, a month after the government in January 2014 violently repressed the CNRP’s protests across Phnom Penh, Kem Monovithya, the eldest daughter of Mr. Sokha, distributed a statement effectively expelling Ms. Sovantha from the party.

“The CNRP would like to clarify that Ms. Thy Sovantha is not involved with the CNRP,” said the statement, issued on February 1.

“I am worried. I wonder that she is CPP spy,” said Eng Ponlork, a younger brother of senior CNRP lawmaker Eng Chhay Eang and the founder of the “I Love Cambodia Hot News II” page, in the following days.

There was evidence that Ms. Sovantha was a CPP plant, Mr. Ponlork explained, and was secretly a partner of CPP activist Phe Sovannarith, who, during the election campaign, served as her main antagonist on Facebook and vigorously defended the CPP...

The lady is suing people for $100,000 because she doesn't like their facebook comments, and of course $1m against KS for something he said in a private telephone conversation that was illegally tapped. The law against defamation has long been used by the higher-ups to silence dissent, but if she wins this case it could be the go ahead to take the defamation laws a step further.

Thy Sovantha in Court Over Facebook Claims

Thy Sovantha, who during the 2013 election rose to fame as a CNRP activist, appeared in court on Tuesday over a lawsuit she filed for damages of $100,000 each from two Facebook users who made posts on the site saying she inflated crowd numbers at rallies.

No matter whether Thy Sovantha is still suing the CNRP bigwigs Rainsy and Sokha for a million dollars for defamation (of character presumably?), but here she is again filing complaints against people making comments about her on Facebook, this time for "incitement to commit activities causing serious turmoil". You can never sue enough people if you're sure to win.

Thy Sovantha Files ‘Incitement’ Complaint Against Publisher
June 27, 2017

Political activist Thy Sovantha on Monday filed a court complaint against a social media broadcaster for incitement to commit a felony over comments he made in a video streamed on Facebook, court documents show.

In a complaint submitted to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, Ms. Sovantha said the comments made by San Buntheoun in a video dated June 3—and watched more than 300,000 times since—amounted to “direct incitement to commit activities causing serious turmoil.”

Ms. Sovantha said she was monitoring about 200 others who were also twisting the news to attack her.
