Korea asks Cambodia for 10,000 workers
Cambodia continues to export its workforce:
Korea Asks for 10,000 Workers
South Korea has asked Cambodia to provide a labor force of more than 10,000 people to help deal with shortages in the construction, agriculture and industrial sectors.
The request comes as the number of people signing up to take the Korean language test, which is required for those hoping to work in South Korea, greatly increased.
According to a report from the Labor Ministry, more than 50,000 candidates took the language test on Friday and Saturday. The test was officially organized by the Korean Ministry of Employment and implemented by the human resources department of the ministry, in cooperation with the Committee on Training and Sending Workers to Work Overseas at the Labor Ministry...

They will be far safer and better-protected (except from the bitter Korean winters) than working in Qatar, KSA or elsewhere in the Gulf

Sure will be, just ask all the foreign labourers slaving away in the 40-50 deg heat in places like Dubai at the moment during Ramadan...not allowed to even drink water!mammothboy2 wrote:They will be far safer and better-protected (except from the bitter Korean winters) than working in Qatar, KSA or elsewhere in the Gulf

Re: Korea asks Cambodia for 10,000 workers
I'd like to think that they could put a framework into place to get 10,000 Cambodian workers to feel confident about going to Korea (Seoul). If they were assured good salaries with decent accommodation and communications with home they would feel a lot more comfortable. The reality however is that they'll more likely be totally exploited and live in a fucking shed that they get charged most of their salary to live in, if the salary was even paid in the first place.PSD-Kiwi wrote:Sure will be, just ask all the foreign labourers slaving away in the 40-50 deg heat in places like Dubai at the moment during Ramadan...not allowed to even drink water!mammothboy2 wrote:They will be far safer and better-protected (except from the bitter Korean winters) than working in Qatar, KSA or elsewhere in the Gulf
So it could be a great idea for both nations, but it needs a bit of care, there are actual people involved.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Re: Korea asks Cambodia for 10,000 workers
Cheap foreign (immigrant and/or sojourner) labour benefits the capitalist class, which is why Germany has so many lovely Turks, Holland has Moroccans
and Britain has over a million-and-a-half talented and vibrantly-enriching Pakistanis..
Korea now has free unions and an outspoken opposition.
What is being said in Korea about this enormous influx of cheap Cambodian labour?
Are any readers here in Korea and in a position to tell us?

This newspaper account sounds fine but are there any horror stories?

Older readers may recall that it is often said that the laws here concerning Cambodians marrying
foreigners came into being because rural male Koreans were marrying gullible Cambodian women
and then obliging them to work as farm labourers on the family farm seven days a week ( but probably
working no harder than would expected of rural Korean women marrying into farming families.).

And from https://yobeol.files.wordpress.com/2015 ... ations.pdfThere are about 250,000 migrant workers in the country under the Employment Permit System (EPS), which allows employers to bring in workers in industries where labour is tight, including agriculture, construction and manufacturing. Many of the new arrivals come from Southeast Asia, mostly Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam.
However, the country continues to grapple with alarming issues of abuse and mistreatment among those who now call South Korea home. Due to a special clause in the Labor Standards Act, Article 63, the safeguards that protect workers in most industries, such as rules on working hours, weekly paid rest days and daily breaks, are excluded from the agricultural sector.
The main complaints from agricultural migrant workers include abuse or assault, working overtime without pay, inadequate shelter, lack of proper toilets and threats of deportation.
It is estimated that there are currently 35,000 Cambodian workers in South Korea, and those workers annually send approximately 200 million USD worth of remittance back to Cambodia.(Khuon, 2015)

It is sad that good age and labor are absored to work abroad.
