What to do when you get lost in the jungle?
What to do when you get lost in the jungle?
I guess most of you guys here have experiences in trekking. So it would be nice to hear your trekking experiences and some tips of preparation like what are things to take with and what to do when you get lost in the jungle alone or with someone. Perhaps how to survive when you get lost in the jungle having only a backpack which contains a few books, pens, a big bottle of water and a few chewing gums?
បើសិនធ្វើចេះ ចេះឲ្យគេកោត បើសិនធ្វើឆោត ឆោតឲ្យគេអាណិត។
If you know a lot, know enough to make them respect you, if you are stupid, be stupid enough so they can pity you.

Re: What to do when you get lost in the jungle?
I do a lot of birding in rain forest (which is worse than jungle as it is much denser) and have gotten lost on occasion. A good GPS (with spare batteries and a map loaded, as it is useless without) goes a long way. You will not always get a signal if the cover is really dense but the latest GPS's are pretty good at getting a fix.
Mobile phone is a good idea if the area has coverage.
It is always a good idea to let someone know where you are heading and when you expect to be back.
These days, there are few forests left without any trails of some sort, following those will get you to people sooner or later (just make sure you are not following animal trails.
If there are streams, follow them downstream; this will get you out eventually.
If I am on my own and head out the whole day, I will have water (how much depends on the season) and food for 2-3 days. I will also carry a small first-aid kit as well as a small torch. A Leatherman is always handy and, of course, aforementioned GPS and phone.
Do not try and do a Bear Grylls out there; unlike him you will not be surrounded by medical staff and helicopters.

Chewing gum? Books? Pen? I don't know about anyone else, but my hiking pack never carried those. Waterproof match's/firestarting-flint-steel, paper of some sort (ok a book, or tampons work good to stay dry and start a fire),belt-knife/large knife in pack, small med pack, compact food, water, torch/light, a little heavy string or light rope, a compact space blanket/raincoat, mosquito repellent, bottle of tea-tree oil (good for many things), small fishing pack with line hooks etc, a couple guitar strings with the metal loop ends to make animal snares out of . Since a lot of my hiking was in bush Alaska, there I would add a large caliber rifle and/or pistol for snaggle-tooth-land-sharks (bears.) I usually planned ahead so never got lost (in Alaska, you get lost and aren't prepared, chances are you die.)

Re: What to do when you get lost in the jungle?
Just stepping outside my apartment and I'm in a jungle. If I turn left it's 136 street with wild bitches hungry for my money, and if I turn wrong , it's street 104 with more animals on heat and willing to do anything they can to attack and bring down a innocent old man like me. Every step of the way I am attacked by moto-dops and tuk-tuk drivers and beggars.
Before leaving home I always make sure I have emergency supplies of condoms and Viagra and fill my wallet up with all the 100 riel I can find. But in the end it does not matter how lost in the [ PP ] jungle I am, I know I am always in the place I love and it's my home.

Re: What to do when you get lost in the jungle?
Please explain what you mean by Trekking?
Ie like Trekking in Nepal where you hike from tea house to tea house
or in thailand where you trek from village to village
or trekking on ur own with no idea where you will sleep or eat
I always carry; hat, sunscreen, my Etrek gps, ( with built in compass), Toilet paper ( nothing worse than only having to use leaves) , small pad and pen, camera, extra mem card, water bottle, snacks, credit card and id ( u never know where your going to end up)
PLUS my day pack has different things depending on where i am headed
"Alice: Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?
The Cat: That depends a good deal on where you want to get to
Alice: I don't much care where.
The Cat: Then it doesn't much matter which way you go.
Alice: so long as I get somewhere.
The Cat: Oh, you're sure to do that, if only you walk long enough."

In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST
