What do you do with your 100r notes ?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

What do you do with your 100r notes ?

Post by Anchor Moy »

This story in the PPP about collecting 100r notes for charity got me thinking : http://www.phnompenhpost.com/lifestyle/ ... mall-money

What do you do with your 100r notes? Do you collect them,or give them out to beggars or your kids ? Do you keep them until you have enough for a bottle of decent whiskey ? Do you just spend them as if they were legal currency and ignore the expression of the lady in the shop ?
Or do you throw handfuls of them over the balcony when you feel bored and unappreciated ? :sledgehammer:

I stick some in a pouch on my bag to pay for air, otherwise there's a big carrier bag full of them at home.

I buy a (Khmer Language) newspaper every morning with 10 x 100r, and I always throw a few in my motorbike underseat to pay for the extra little cost of petrol (e.g. if 2 litres is 8400 I'd pay the 400 with the hundreds and the rest with thousands).

Rest of 'our' hundreds my wife keeps, in bundles of thousands, to take to the temple on big religious days to give to beggars.

I bundle them up in tens, then hide them in different places in the house. Usually they don't stay hidden for long, so I guess I'm not good at the game.

I keep them in stacks of 10 in my office desk and when the wad gets to big I send my driver to change it back into dollars.

The most I have collected at any 1 time ended just over $60.00.

I offload them for small purchases, e.g. 2000r bottle of water = 1 x 1000, 1 x 500, 5 x 100

Stick them in the kids hospital donation box. But my real fav is saving $30 worth up to pay a prostitute with.

I stick them in a big wooden frog here in my office all year, then on Chinese New Year I empty the frog, stack all the 100s and take them to Wat Phnom on New Year's evening to hand out to the beggars that line walkway and stairs. Sometimes it amounts to quite a bit of money. I've begun putting new 500s in the frog as well.
