Girl murders another girl for her earrings - 20 years prison.
This happened back in Nov 2015, but I can't find the article here. That's surprising because it marked me at the time as one of the most horrific crimes that was being reported (among so many others.)
The murderer was to all appearances a good village girl who was never in trouble, then one day she just decides to murder her 9yo neighbour - who as her neighbour, was probably like a little sister to her, trusted her - because she wants to sell the kid's gold earrings. Stupidity and greed I guess, but what gets to me most, is that in this girl's head:1 life = 2 gold earrings. Why is she thinking like this ?
I wonder if she was living with her parents ? Seems like a lot of juvenile crime in the villages is committed by teenagers who live with extended family because their parents are working away. Anyway, big failure by someone to install basic notions of right and wrong.

Kandal teen gets 20 years for murder of 9-year-old

The Kandal Provincial Court yesterday sentenced a 16-year-old girl to 20 years in prison for the murder of her 9-year-old neighbour in Ang Snuol district.
Oeurn Sopheap was charged on November 9 last year with the murder of Keat Seavly, whose body had been discovered a few days before drowned in a rice field close to her home in Tomloup Kpos Cheung village.
Sopheap was accused of stealing Seavly’s gold earrings and a platinum ring, which Sopheap sold at a nearby market for $28.
Initially, after Seavly was reported missing, Sopheap had even helped authorities in their search. Once the young girl was found dead the following day, however, she hid in a field, only to be found and arrested later that night.
Court spokesman Ek Sun Reaksmey said: “According to her actions she would have been sentenced to life in prison, but as she was underage, it was reduced to 20 years.”
At the time, residents of Tomloup Kpos Cheung, the village where Seavly and Sopheap grew up, were shocked by the murder.
“She never stole or committed crime,” village chief Yong Sieng said in November.
“I think the crime is generally because of drugs or alcohol that leads to violence, but the murder case in my village had nothing to do with that...”

20 years still is not enough.
It takes a special kind of psychopath to kill a 9 year old for some earrings.
I hope she enjoys prison.

Good almighty SkyGuy. Killing a child. You have to wonder if it wasn't her but some male rapist. A common occurrence, sadly.

You mean her parents made her confess to save her older brother?ExPenhMan wrote:Good almighty SkyGuy. Killing a child. You have to wonder if it wasn't her but some male rapist. A common occurrence, sadly.
Let's face it anything could be true, I certainly don't trust the papers. Mass corruption is everywhere.

That's not a bad speculation. The brother being more valuable to the family than the daughter.juansweetpotato wrote:You mean her parents made her confess to save her older brother?ExPenhMan wrote:Good almighty SkyGuy. IMO that is bad speculation unless you guys have some more info to share. I think you just don't want this sweet teenage girl to be a murderer. Nobody knows if she has a brother or even a family. (My speculation is that she doesn't have family living with her, but its as factual as yours.) Rape has not been mentioned.ExPenhMan wrote:That's not a bad speculation. This happened in Nov 2015 and there is no reason to think that this 16 year old teenager did not kill her 9 year old neighbour. Whether it was really for the earrings or not, we'll probably never know; but she sold the earrings for $28. There could well be more to the story, but it looks like one child killed another in cold blood for whatever reason. Sad and weird.

Yeah, if I remember correctly her excuse was so she could buy a phone to ring her boyfriend (?). Sounds bloody weird to me, must be more to it.Anchor Moy wrote:IMO that is bad speculation unless you guys have some more info to share. That little girl would have been better off in an orphanage.

Oeun Sopheap, who has been in provisional detention since her arrest shortly after the murder, was brought to the Kandal Provincial Court on Monday and convicted of premeditated murder with aggravating circumstances but was spared a life sentence due to her age, according to deputy prosecutor Ek Sunreaksmey.
“She should be jailed for life, but she is just a 16-year-old juvenile, so the judge decided…that she can be sentenced to only 20 years,” he said, adding that Sopheap was sent back to the provincial prison “immediately upon her sentencing.”
The teenager was arrested on the evening of November 7, the day after she drowned Kiet Sievly in a stream in Kandal’s Ang Snuol district. Coveting her young neighbor’s earrings and ring, Sopheap had invited the girl to join her for a swim in the stream, according to police.
“They took a bicycle to the scene, where the suspect strangled the girl and held her head underwater while stepping on the back of her legs until she died,” district serious crimes police chief Thach Sovanna said at the time.
After the murder, Sopheap took the child’s jewelry to a local market and sold it for 110,000 riel, or about $27.50, according to police, who were able to link Sopheap to the crime when vendors who purchased the jewelry heard about Kiet Sievly’s disappearance.
