[CEO News: Please note that this case is not "illegal logging", but simply a report of a convoy of trucks leaving Mondulkiri with too many logs.]

13 Lim Royal timber trucks Stopped for Overloading in Mondulkiri
Mondulkiri Province: On the night of February 27, 2021, the Anti-Economic Crimes Police stopped a convoy of 13 Tim Royal timber trucks at Or Romeas point in Sen Monorom City, Mondulkiri Province on suspicion of overloading their permits from the Forestry Administration.
The 13 trucks were transporting sawn timber from the company in Koh Nhek district to be processed at the company's location in Snuol district, Kratie province.
Image
Heang Sopheak, a prosecutor with the Mondulkiri Provincial Prosecutor's Office, confirmed that the 13 vehicles were seized for possible overloading. He said that Lim Royal Company has a valid permit, but the authorities reported that the transport is overloaded, so both the authorities and the Forestry Administration must check and measure the load properly, or it must return to its original location and the company must also cooperate with the competent authorities as well as the judiciary.
Image
A representative of Lim Royal confirmed that the 13 trucks were properly licensed by the Forestry Administration. According to the company, in the case of this measurement, it is also a good point to confirm that the transport company has the correct license and load according to the regulations of the Forestry Administration.
He said that all the wood is transported from its forest concession in Koh Nhek district, Mondulkiri province and stored in Snuol district, Kratie province is to be processed for supply to partner companies in Sihanoukville.

Cambodia News, (Kratie): In the early hours of March 4, 2021, two unlicensed luxury timber vans were seized on National Road 7 at Banteay Village, Koulab Commune, Chit Borey District, Kratie Province.
Image
The operation was under the direction of Brigadier General San Bunthan, Commander of the Kratie Provincial Gendarmerie. He also led a patrol on the road and in cooperation with the Forestry Administration.
The identity of the van drivers is unknown because they both got out and ran away when they were stopped by the gendarmes.

This shit stories of the drivers being stopped and then running away is so much bullshit.

The Brigadier General led a patrol of gendarmes to stop the vans.

Let me guess that they just parked on the side of the road and stepped onto the road in front of the vans and said "stop".

One would have to believe that these trained officers under the leadership of such a senior person would have had more than one or two blokes standing on the road. They would have picked a location where the targeted vehicles could not see the road block before they entered the site and that they would have had officers stationed behind the stop point to prevent the targeted vehicles fleeing or turning around. It would also be set in a spot where the drivers and any passengers could not go anywhere i.e. in a cutting and then station a few blokes on each side.
Spoiler:
With the knowledge of how these operations have been conducted before the senior management would not have allowed anyone to "run away" unless they wanted them to or (heaven forbid) tea money.

Cambodia News, (Mondulkiri Province): The National Gendarmerie Force has acted on information concerning illegal piles of wood that traders were storing in Mondulkiri, ready to transport by truck to some depots in Tbong Khmum and Prey Veng province.
Sources say that the National Gendarmerie arrived at the target on March 15, 2021 at O Sre Chheng, at Tro Pong Thom village, Sre Chhouk commune, Keo Seima district, Mondulkiri province.

According to the source, the crackdown came after the stocks of illegal wood were reported by the media, and so the National Gendarmerie team went to investigate the crime scene, and then handed over the task to the Mondulkiri Provincial Gendarmerie in Keo Seima district continue to follow the legal procedures.
Image
However, local public opinion says that loads of illegal timber, both small and large, are openly transported through Keo Seima district day and night, and they never see forest administration officials, environmental officials or any local authorities crack down directly on forestry crimes; except in this case, the National Royal Gendarmerie came down to crack down and report to higher authorities.

Unfortunately, after this timely intervention by the gendarmes, nobody knows who is taking over the trafficked wood on a local level, and there are no registered figures on the amount of trees that are being destroyed in protected areas.

Okay this has been going on a long time and don't seem to be stopped in the foreseeable future. Obviously the rare and hardwood is worth lots of monies when it's passed on to the middle man in Vietnam, more so at its destination China.
Who can answer the question, who says it's illegal trade, and why is there so much surveillance and interest by the west?
Always "hope" but never "expect".

I had heard about Canada, didn't realise this though 'Besides traditional markets with high export value such as the US, Japan, China, EU, and the Republic of Korea, some other potential markets also bring more opportunities for Vietnam to promote furniture exports, like Canada, Russia and India.'
&
'The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s General Department of Forestry is confident of reaching the export target for timber and wooden products of 13 billion USD for the whole year 2020.'

Youth group claims illegal loggers have raided Roka [Wildlife Santuary]
Lay Samean | Publication date 29 March 2021 | 23:22 ICT

A senior Ministry of Environment official has rejected the Cambodian Youth Network (CYN) report detailing 100 illegal logging incidents they claim took place in early 2021 in Prey Preah Roka Wildlife Sanctuary in Preah Vihear province.

The denials came after the CYN issued a report on March 29 regarding these 100 cases and what they say is an ongoing burning and deforestation in Prey Preah Roka Wildlife Sanctuary that had begun since local communities, organisations, associations and forest activists had all been barred from any patrolling of the sanctuary.

Environment ministry spokesman Neth Pheaktra dismissed the CYN report, noting that they are not legally recognised as a partner organisation of the environment ministry.

“I won’t comment on a report that was compiled without the environment ministry’s permission or in accordance with the laws on protected natural areas,” he said.

He emphasised that government through the environment ministry continues its efforts to protect and conserve natural resources in all 7.3 million hectares of protected natural areas.

Pheaktra said while he acknowledged that small-scale forest crimes persisted, no major crimes have been committed recently as the ministry is continuing to prevent them and also to focus on the livelihoods of residents in the communities surrounding the various sanctuaries.

CYN’s report claimed that between March 19-21 this year, the forest protection project team of their organisation gathered evidence of forest crimes in Prey Preah Roka Wildlife Sanctuary, across Choam Ksan, Tbeng Meanchey and Chheb districts of Preah Vihear province.

“We found 100 cases of criminal activity that had recently taken place in the forest, mostly the logging of rare and priceless trees of about 45cm up to 1.35m in diameter in areas of jungle and semi-dense forest,” the report read.
