Krispy Kreme Doughnut Store Opens First Branch in Cambodia
by Peter Ford | May 23, 2016

Lured by the prospect of a free box of 12 doughnuts each week for a year, 24-year-old English teacher Yroll Desamparado waited 22 hours outside Phnom Penh’s first Krispy Kreme doughnut store over the weekend, ahead of its grand opening on Sunday.

“It took patience, strength and endurance” he said on Sunday morning, wearing an orange “#1” wristband as he waited for the doors to open at 10 a.m.

The doughnut giant, and latest U.S. fast-food chain to come to Cambodia, announced the competition on its Facebook page on Wednesday, with second and third place finishers getting six months and three months of weekly free doughnuts, respectively.

“I arrived at 7 a.m. yesterday. I really wanted the doughnuts,” Mr. Desamparado said outside the shop on the corner of streets 302 and 51 in Boeng Keng Kang I, just a few doors down from long-standing USA Donut and another competitor, Big Apple Donuts & Coffee.

I really hate this shit (er, not the donuts specifically... read on). The Aussie media - TV news mostly - gets so excited every time to promote the fact that global chains like Topshop, Zara, Uni Qlo etc open a store here. For a start how is this newsworthy? The real story is that local businesses will be the losers when these big brands open, not to mention they will probably pay bugger all tax contributing to the economy of the market they have now chosen to exploit. Meh.

And now I want a donut. Gah.

I never found Krispie Kreme that good. It's ok, but I wouldn't buy any more than once per year even if I lived around the corner. They tried to come into my country a decade ago or so but failed miserably and eventually pulled out. I naturally assumed they were going belly up, so I was surprised when last year I heard they were coming here (and upon research, found that they were expanding globally quite aggressively).

I went to see the closing show of the circus in PP about a month ago. Krispy Kreme decided to do a huge give away after the show for promotional purposes. As soon as they announced what was happening people ran like the building was on fire. Saw a lot of families stacking more boxes of donuts onto a moto than I ever thought possible (think 14+ cases of anchor). I've never tried these before as I'm not a huge fan of really sweet things, but I took a box home between the misses and I. We got through half a donut each . I got diabetes (jk) . We gave the rest away to everyone on our street.
Sweet sweet will always do well here. Suuuuugaaaaar!
