Police Arrest Alleged Ice Smugglers in Stung Treng, Phnom Penh

by Phan Soumy | May 17, 2016

A Laotian man caught smuggling almost a kilogram of crystal methamphetamine into Stung Treng province was arrested in Thala Barivat district on Monday morning, police said.

Khampha Sythou, 40, was busted with 911 grams of “ice” in O’Svay commune after entering Cambodia from Laos’ Bolikhamsai province, Stung Treng provincial anti-drug police chief Nou Hour said.

“The Laotian man said it was his first time trying to smuggle drugs into Cambodia. However, according to my experience in previous cases, most arrested drug traffickers would say that it is their first time while in fact they might have been smuggling drugs into Cambodia before,” he said.

Mr. Hour added that police had used “special skills” to apprehend the suspect, who would be charged today, but declined to reveal details of his department’s techniques.

On April 29, two other Laotians were arrested in Stung Treng, also with about 1 kilogram of crystal methamphetamine.

Stream of Meth Busts Continues Along Laos Border

BY PHAN SOUMY | MAY 20, 2016

For the third time this week, a Laotian national was arrested after smuggling large quantities of meth into Stung Treng province on Thursday.

Police caught 45-year-old Kham Mai Sainga Vong at 9:30 a.m. about 200 meters from Trapaing Kriel International Checkpoint in Stung Treng City’s Samakki commune as he was carrying 977.2 grams of crystal methamphetamine on a motorbike, provincial justice department director Huy Khway said.

“Nothing was found on him besides a big box containing crystal methamphetamine,” he said, adding that police had been planning the sting for several days before they intercepted the Laotian.

“I wasn’t sure whether this drug was meant for Cambodia or a third country, as the drug smuggler’s operation is really complicated. They might only have asked him to bring it into Cambodia and someone else was waiting to bring it to a third country,” Mr. Khway said.
