Work Permit Possession?

Post by lostjeremy »

Is there any known law of who is suppose to be in possession of the work permit - the employer or employee?

Our employer has ours which each employee paid for out of our salaries a few months back but now they are not being given to us.
I think they are scared that once we have them some of us may be quitting.
Just curious about any laws or regulations?

The employer is supposed to keep your work permit. The employee keeps the work book.

What's a work book? Obviously I've never worked in Cambodia. I picture the work permit as being a piece of paper with your name, passport number, employer name, etc. No idea what a work book is. How big is it? What's in it?

Isn't the employer supposed to hold on to the work book, and the employee the work permit?

Either way, good idea to ensure that you have copies and scans of any and all documents, just to be on the safe side.

You are right, I had them mixed up.

A work permit looks similar to a passport, with name, photo, date of birth and a few pages for stamps.

Thanks.
Im needing mine because the govt needs it for my marriage certificate. And I need to open a second account with Maybank and they require a work permit.
Anyone have any links in Khmer or English by chance on a Cambodia government website saying the employee holds on to their permit?
What a freakin hassle my employer has turned something really simple into.

Are they flat out refusing to give it to you?

Are you confused again? The work book looks similar to a passport...the work permit looks like an ID card.

Yea seems odd, have you explained to your employer that the MoFA and MoI require that you present the original to them as part of your marriage application? That should help, if not, get Mr Ung Vantha of the Legal & Consular Department of the MoFA to call your employer personally, he is the guy who approves the initial marriage application prior to going onto the MoI.
