Australian Dies From Redback Spider Bite
This story is making the news in Oz today. But I'm going call BS on this.
No-one has died from a redback spider bite (U.S. the black widow spider) in Oz since 1955, the year before an antivenom was developed.
The last death by spider bite in Oz was in 1979 from a Funnel-web spider bite.
This guy that died, was in hospital for 4 days then was released. He died 2 days later.
While the tabloids are running with this headline, the bottom line is that "The family will have to wait for a coroners’ report to find out why he died."

http://www.theguardian.com/environment/ ... pider-biteAccording to the Australian Museum, more than 250 people are given antivenom each year, with several milder instances probably going unreported. Bites cause pain, sweating, muscular weakness, nausea and vomiting, but serious illness does not develop for at least three hours, allowing victims time to seek medical attention.
http://www.smh.com.au/national/health/r ... o44eb.htmlNSW Health says redback spider bites are common but very unlikely to prove lethal, even if untreated. They can result in severe pain and symptoms that can continue from hours to days.
The initial bite may only cause mild discomfort or irritation, and sometimes is not even noticed.
Pain usually increases over an hour or two and may radiate up the limb. Abdominal or chest pain may develop, as may pain in other parts of the body.
The pain is persistent and usually severe enough to interfere with normal activities, such as work or sleep.
The duration of effects vary, with only moderate pain for a few hours in some cases, to severe persistent pain for two to five days.

I'm a bit surprised to read that nobody in the US has died from those buggers in over 10 years.
We used to find them all over the place back in the days. Nightmare material.

I patted a funnel web spider once, the landscaper had it pressed against a shovel.

And for the record, "black widow spider" is a much cooler name than red back spider. That's just plain lame. The world really needs to start getting their act together and speak American English.

Was it living in his dreadlocks?
UT, one thing I found out the hard way, is that susceptibility to snake/spider venom is largely an individual thing, even different species affect different people in a varying way.
Likewise, certain people respond better to antivenom than others, and certain antivenoms can cause problems just on their own. A few people who have been bitten often by snakes and who have received antivenom several times are now allergic to the antivenom, so if they get bitten, bye-bye.
Several cases on record of people being discharged and then dying, particularly when elapid bites are involved (cobras, mambas, etc., neurotoxic venoms) Nowadays most hospitals know this and keep people for 2-3 days longer than necessary.
Death is usually by asphyxiation caused by chest muscle paralysis.

Black, is not the ''in fashion'' colour for the year of the monkey. Everything that is red is good, just ask a Chinaman.General Mackevili wrote:And for the record, "black widow spider" is a much cooler name than red back spider. That's just plain lame. In this case, I agree with GM, Black Widow is so much cooler.
Wasn't there a fighter plane called the Black Widow?

LOL, I just remembered the Jimmy Carr joke: the worst thing about being bitten by a deadly spider is that you're probably Australian.
