Expat Doyle Te Maiharoa From New Zealand Dies in Hospital of Heart Attack After Leaving Work (Downtown Hostel Siem Reap)
Siem Reap, Cambodia: 32 year old New Zealander Doyle Te Maiharoa dies in hospital in his sleep after leaving work at Downtown Hostel a few days earlier because of a bad back.
The British owner of Downtown Hostel, Mark Healey took him to the hospital and said he was in good spirits at midnight, but when he went back to check up on him at 7am the following morning, doctors informed him that Doyle Te Maiharoa died in his sleep of a heart attack.
Doyle Te Maiharoa is from Queenstown, New Zealand and moved to Phnom Penh in 2015.
Here is a quote from Mark Healey on Facebook about Doyle's death:
"I have been holding with publishing all day out of respect for Doyle's family, but we've had quite a lot of phone calls and messages concerning Doyle the last couple of hours, and feel that we now need to pass on information.
Doyle has been at home the last couple of days resting a bad back- but it turned more serious yesterday, and we had to admit him to hospital. The doctors informed us that he had a seriously high blood pressure and admitted him to intensive care, where he was monitored by doctors.
I personally left him this morning at 0.45 am in good spirits, and 100% aware of the situation.
Checking back on him at 7.30 am, the doctors informed me that Doyle had suffered a heart attack in his sleep, and passed away at 4.20 am local time.
Doyle has been a tremendous help to me in running the hostel the past 12 months. He has been extremely loyal- always willing to do far above what was expected of him.
We'll miss Doyle for many things- but for me, it will be his smile and humour.
I am so sorry to be the messenger of such tragic news."
According to Doyle's family, his body is being sent to the British embassy in Phnom Penh and will be sent to New Zealand.

He has Whanau back in NZ, his Tangi will be held back there. The British Embassy in PP is assisting the NZ Embassy in Thailand with repatriation arrangements.
He passed away at the hospital, as per the quote from his employer in the OP, not at his home.
RIP Doyle...my sincere condolonces to his family and friends back in NZ and here in Cambodia.

Yes, true that.Duncan wrote:Other stories say he died at home ????
When we gather news stories there are almost always conflicting sources to some degree or another.
In this case, I found the Facebook post by his boss/friend and I concluded that it was likely the most accurate version of events. So far we've done pretty good at getting the correct story published, and I believe we got this right as well.
Sounds like you knew him, condolences. I will have Google a few of those terms you've used.PSD-Kiwi wrote:He has Whanau back in NZ, his Tangi will be held back there. The British Embassy in PP is assisting the NZ Embassy in Thailand with repatriation arrangements.

It also sounds like a legit heart attack caused from underlying heart conditions this time. Good to see a correct "cause of death" now and again.
