In Kampot there are different varieties grown from different countries. Sources are India, Indonesia, etc.

Pepper does not originate from Kampot.

Bought Kampot pepper and took it to Australian to cook with. Couldn’t tell the difference with the cheap stuff!

Just make sure you get the genuine stuff! :D

Pepper production in Cambodia is mentioned in documents as old as the reports of the Chinese explorer Tchéou Ta Kouan in the13th century http://unctad.org/meetings/en/Presentat ... Pepper.pdf

There are two varieties of plants used by the farmers in Kampot: Kamchay and Lampong (or Belantoeung), known locally as “big leaves” and “small leaves”. Replication is done by cuttings. The geographical indication’s book of specifications forbids the use of any other varieties.

Plantations are controlled by the Kampot Pepper Promotion Association (KPPA) and by the independent certification body EcoCert. Only accredited members of the KPPA, adhering to the PGI criteria, are authorised to sell pepper using the “Kampot Pepper” appellation of origin.http://kampotpepper.com/

The "long pepper" has a distinctly different flavour to other pepper, to my taste. We also use it in one of our soaps.
