Hypermarket Giant to try its luck in Cambodia

Post by Rutiger »

I suppose it was only a matter of time before the mega-retailers set up shop here. I thought the Thai conglomerate "Big C" would have entered the Cambodian market first. Giant dominates the market in parts of the Middle East as well. Such buyers-of-scale can always undercut local mom-and-pop type shophouses with low prices. All "progress" comes at a price.

Giant, one of the biggest players of the retail industry in Malaysia, will open its first Cambodian outlet in Phnom Penh’s City Mall and is planning a second outlet in the Parkson shopping mall currently under construction, according to a source involved in the project.

The hypermarket chain, which operates over 145 stores in Malaysia and has a presence in six other countries, will establish its City Mall store in the space formerly occupied by Lucky Supermarket.

However, the new outlet, expected to be one of the chain’s smaller supermarkets, should not be seen as a competitor to the Lucky chain, the source said.

“Giant and Lucky Supermarket are in fact partners,” the source said. “Both of them will operate hand-in-hand to serve their target clients as they are both under the same company.”

Giant is a wholly owned subsidiary of pan-Asian retailer Dairy Farm International Holdings Ltd (DFI), which also holds a 70 per cent stake in Lucky Supermarket’s parent company, DFI Lucky Private Ltd.

“With the presence of Giant in Cambodia, there will be more variety of products available,” the source said.

Representatives of DFI Lucky and Dairy Farm International did not respond to interview requests yesterday.

Giant in the Middle East are awful. They may be the only supermarket chain in the world that makes Lucky look professional.

I doubt they're going to win huge market share in Cambodia.

Such mega-retailers typically peddle cheap Chinese-made products to undiscerning, budget minded buyers at discount prices. That appeal seems to be universal. The first entrant always takes the biggest risk, but it might pay off if they can stick through the initial investment and logistics phase. Giant seems to have an advantage due to their existing links with Lucky, so they have in-country experience.

Looking forward to it. Giant in Indonesia was great in comparison to other local chains. Lucky also seems to be stocked with Giant products (mops and stuff) at the minute.
Be good, or be good at it.

I thought the Giant stores in the Persian Gulf countries were adequate. It was a much better shopping experience than trying to haggle for reasonable prices for goods in a souk.

Please a big grocery store of some kind in Snookyville. Samadera keeps raising the prices on everything. Lucky was suppose to come to Snooky, but that never happened.

Lucky's prices are not cheap. Of the several items that I buy which are the same size, same brand,, eg Flora margarine , Lucky's price is always higher than Bayon.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.
