Five Women Arrested for Prostitution in Siem Reap

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Five Women Arrested for Prostitution in Siem Reap

Khmer Times / Srey Kumneth Monday, 22 February 2016

Five female prostitutes were arrested in Siem Reap City on Saturday, according to local officials. Police worked with residents to identify the women, whose ages ranged from 25 to 45, said Doung Thavry, chief of the Anti-Human Trafficking and Juvenile Protection office in Siem Reap.

Last year, according to Mrs. Thavry, around 26 workers were taken into police custody for “re-education” and were asked to sign an agreement to stop working in the industry. She added that many of the women have no choice besides sex work to support themselves and their families.

“Most of them sell their bodies because they have to support their life and their children,” Mrs. Thavry said. Saturday’s arrests were not the first police attempt to clamp down on the sex trade in the busy tourist city this year, however.

“Early this year, the police detained five more women who promised to stop doing that. Because the police just wanted the city to be more attractive for tourism,” Mrs. Thavry said, adding that the culture of sex work in their city bred anarchy.

I could understand the newsworthiness if it had been white women. Incidentaly, how many white prostitutes are working in Siam Reap nowadays?

According to the statistics, about 75,000. Most of them are underage.

In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

a very thinly divided line as to what exactly defines prostitution...............
reminds me of the dialogue in a Woody Allen movie in 1991 shadows and Fog

Kleinmann:
Uh, I've... I've never paid for sex in my life.

Prostitute: Oh, you just think you haven't. [laughs]

I'm sure the police strongly encouraged those women to continue providing sex, just not to accept or expect money for it.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
